Exclusive: McCain tells Leno he won't run for president again
McCain:
He’s “proud” and “grateful” that she was on the ticket, but as far as him rebuking the Africa/NAFTA smears, it sounds like this is as close we’re going to get:
Asked by Leno about griping about Palin from unidentified McCain operatives in the days following the election, the Arizona senator said, “These things happen in campaigns.
“I think I have at least a thousand, quote, top advisers,” he scoffed. “A top adviser said? I’ve never even heard of … a top adviser or high-ranking Republican official.”
However, McCain never directly addressed the embarrassing controversy over Palin’s expensive campaign wardrobe purchased by the Republican National Committee, or statements by unidentified McCain aides who have reportedly said she was not prepared on foreign policy.
All kidding aside, John McCain told Jay Leno last night that he will not run again for president when he's 76, saying that he'll leave that to "another generation of leaders coming along."
He also defended running mate Sarah Palin - whose interview with Matt Lauer aired on "Today" yesterday and is scheduled to air again this morning - saying "I couldn't be happier with her."
When Jay Leno asked about unnamed "aides" who had leaked details of Palin's reported Neiman-Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue $150,000 buying spree - which embarrassed the McCain-Palin ticket weeks before the general election - McCain called it "one of the things that happen in campaigns. ... I'm just very proud to have [had] Sarah Palin and her wonderful family."
Both host and guest were gracious and funny, and McCain was clearly comfortable and expansive in the presence of a friendly late-night host. This was in marked contrast to his recent, pre-election appearance on "The Late Show with David Letterman," whose host spent about two weeks in late September milking McCain's abrupt cancellation on his show. Instead, Leno gently prodded, and McCain quipped. How has he been since the election? "I've been sleeping like a baby," he said. "I sleep two hours and wake up and cry."
Viewers learned that this was McCain's 14th appearance on the program, which yielded two pretty good lines a few minutes later. Why, Leno wondered, wasn't he the funny, smart guy on the campaign trail that he had been so many times on "Tonight" and on other venues? "I think these are tough times and campaigns are tough enough. I don't think people wanted a stand-up comic. That's why I didn't worry about your write-in candidacy."

Hi jjenet, thanks for posting this story. You should remove the label "exclusive" from the title though, as that would mean this is something someone told you exclusively, ie something that nobody else knows. Did you mean to write "breaking"?

Thanks for the Good article. Most of us knew that he probably would not seek the presidency again. If his age was a big issue this election, could you imagine 4 years from now. Sen. McCain was back to the guy I know. He really shouldn't have shed his personality as it is one of his strengths. His advisers blew it and he blew it by listening to them. Just to clarify, reporters talked about a Palin buying spree. Palin never bought any of those items. She had no idea what was bought.
When I think of a buying spree, I imagine myself as Wilma in the Flintstones holding my credit card over my head and running to the store, yelling "CHARGE it". I assure you, If Palin did such a spree it would be docimented somehwere and would be posted all over the net.
So you get my 10 recommendations for a well written work

Hey John, thanks for the "Heads Up"! Maybe you can put to rest that Maverick thingy too ... it DIDN'T work.
In order for there to be a debate and have an issue fully understood by those who choose to listen … there must exist a Point and a Counterpoint!
The reason John McCain wasn’t able to do better is that he was busy being both ... "Maverick-y".
Barack Obama only represented one point-of-view and half of the time … John McCain agreed with the point-of-view.
That left the score:
Conservative POV - .5 Versus Liberal POV - 1.5
John McCain (gang of fourteen leader) was a loser from the jump because as Barack Obama insisted, McCain was just another term of George W. Bush … and in the end, we can all see where this type of centrist leadership has taken our country.
Liberal, large government spending and policies, left unchecked, placing our economy (and freedoms) in peril - thanks!

Edmund, I am willing to give PE Obama a chance but last time we had a near filibuster proof Democratic Government was 1976. Can we remember that era? Pres Clinton enjoyed two years as such from 92-94. How much got done during those years? It is amazing that President Clinton took credit for what congress passed. One positive thing I can say about Pres Clinton was he governed from the Center most of the time. I am not sure we will see that in an Obama administration. Like I said, I am willing to sit back and give Him a chance. I do think that expectations on the left are so high that it will be very difficult for anyone to produce.
The election is lost for conservatives but prior to the economic fall McCain was ahead in the polls. Sometimes it just seems like the universe and it's understanding of all things chose a different path for Us. In my view it is a punishment to the GOP for allowing the wheels to come off due to spending. McCain would have targeted earmarks and other spending issues.
What would be nice is if PE Obama could find a way to get clean bills sent to him. It would be nice for things to pass based on merrit rather then how much pork goes to congressmen for a vote in the affirmative.
Long winded I know.. Sorry Guys.

Good catch Tina we have to maintain integrity is NP is going to become the world alternative news source. I am hoping that was just an oversight.
