Executions of drug convicts on death row need to be sped up : Police chief

"To give them a lesson, drug traffickers must be executed immediately. For this purpose, BNN is coordinating closely with the Attorney General`s Office as the agency responsible for carrying out executions," Sutanto said in his speech at a function to observe International Day against Drugs Abuse and Trafficking at the State Palace on Thursday.

Detaining drug traffickers in prisons did not discourage them, as they even used the prisons as illicit drug trafficking hubs, Sutanto said.

"International drug trafficking syndicates have in fact been run from jails. So prisons cannot stop the crime," he said.

Indonesia had 72 convicted drug offenders on death row but three of them had been executed, one died of natural causes, five had their sentences commuted to life and one to 15 years imprisonment.
