A senior figure in Sri Lanka's government has been killed in an explosion, including at least 10 other people around him.

Authorities say an explosion outside Sri Lanka's capital killed a government minister and several other people.

Government spokesman Anusha Paltipa says the blast occurred early Sunday at the start of a marathon 12 miles from the capital, Colombo.

Paltipa says Minister of Highways and Road Development Jeyaraj Fernandopulle was among those killed. The minister had gone to kick off the race.

Paltipa says several other people also died, though it was not immediately clear how many or what caused the explosion.

Fernandopulle is the second government minister killed in a bombing this year in Sri Lanka, which has been waging a war against Tamil Tiger rebels.
