An area in Scotland has been evacuated over fears that a nearby dam is about to collapse. The resevoir has reached a critical level because of torrential rains.

FAMILIES near a floodrisk reservoir were urged to evacuate as it reached a "critical" level yesterday.

But last night, only six of the households had fled their homes.

Firefighters and council staff were working flat-out to stop the collapse of a dam on the reservoir - the Maich Fishery, near Lochwinnoch, Renfrewshire.

A fire service spokesman said: "Torrential rain on Wednesday night once more raised the water level in the Maich fisheries reservoir to a critical level.

"We and council staff have been working round the clock to ease pressure on the dam by reducing the water level and preventing water getting into the reservoir.

"Six dwellings have been evacuated with a total of about 20 to 30 people. I believe they have gone to stay with friends or family.
