Antigay activist took trip with male 'assistant'
An antigay psychologist who testified for Florida in the state's gay adoption case took a trip to Europe with a gay male prostitute from Miami but says no illegal behavior or sex occurred.
I'm actually quite interested to know why George Alan Rekers, a Baptist minister and scholar who co-founded the Family Research Council, was spotted with a male prostitute at Miami International Airport. He told reporters Penn Bullock and Brandon K. Thorp that he hired the man to help him lift luggage during a trip to Europe. And when I e-mailed Rekers, he gave me the statement he's giving everyone else.
The story first broke at the alternative news site, the Miami NewTimes. A photographer from the NewTimes spotted the pair going through luggage check in en route to Bermuda. The NewTimes reported that Rekers could not deny that his companion belonged to Rent Boys, a site specializing in gay male escort services. When asked if Rekers knew the nature of his work, his young male companion shyly told reporters, "He should have been able to tell you that.".
The Washington Post says Rekers is besieged by interview requests now, as are the Family Research Council and other religious groups Rekers has been involved with.
Rekers has a long record as an expert on why the gay lifestyle is dangerous, and is against gay marriage and adoption. It has been rumored that Rekers attempted to explain away the man as someone he was helping to become an "ex-gay", and to leave the gay lifestyle.
He is also a board member with NARTH ( National Association for Research and Therapy for Homosexuality) who has declined to comment on the story.
