New Orleans - The father of a missing New Orleans boy led investigators to his son's body Saturday and admitted killing the boy to avoid paying child support, police said.  Danny Platt, 22, has been charged with first degree murder in the death of his son, Ja'Shawn Powell, aged 2.
“There was an issue, believe it or not, with him (Danny Platt) recently being ordered to pay child support, and he had made some comments that he would he kill either the wife or the child before he paid child support,” said Superintendent Warren Riley at a press conference. “He was recently ordered to pay child support. Our understanding is he, for the first time in two years, picked up his son, who he had visitation rights for.”
The child had been reported missing late Friday night by his father, Danny Platt, 22, police said.
Platt told investigators that he and his son were standing at the corner of Jackson Avenue and Brainard Street around 11:30 p.m. Friday when three men forced him to the ground at gunpoint, took his son and fled in a dark, 2000-model Chevrolet Tahoe or GMC Yukon, Officer Janssen Valencia said in a news release issued mid-morning Saturday.
The mother, however, doubted the story from Ja Shawn's father.  "We went through child support court on December 4," said Daniella Powell, mother of Ja Shawn.  She said Platt had never picked up the child before, but suddently Friday evening, he called, saying he wanted Ja'Shawn to spend the weekend with him.  She had to comply because he had visitation rights.
“I’m sorry about killing my baby,” said Platt to a mass of reporters and flash bulbs as he was led by detectives. “And I’m sorry for the family that I caused trouble with.

I lack the vocabulary necessary to accurately describe my feelings about this without using unacceptable language.

This is just so sick - just to get out of spending money; how low can you be?

The laws and agencies involved in child custody and visitation are not adequately equipped or resourced to protect children. Rather the children are looked upon as property to be divided as the court had decided. The principals must blindly comply. The result is too often tragic. How tragic that this beautiful child meant less to his father than the cost of partial support.

Totally sad but we need to be aware of such news.

How can I even begin to describe my disdain for this person. I'm just pleased to know he'll have many many unhappy years in prison. Enjoy your life short eyes

Thanks for comments.  This is just so shocking and heart-wrenching ... and incomprehensible, how one could kill one's own precious child, or any, over money.  All we can do is say a prayer for the family tonight, little Ja'Shawn now has a Father to watch over him.

Shocking. Doesn;t the man realise that he is for 50% responsible that this little boy was born? It pisses me off - excuse my language. This little guy did not chose to be born in the first place, but has now become a victim of his father's (the man does not even deserve that title!) greed, ruthlesness and selfishness. I wonder how it can bepossible for people to care so very little for children in general and their own in particular, and regard them as disposable items.

it might shock anyone, but we have to look further before making any judgement on this father. I an father of two kids, and I am one of many child support victims. their mother is making double of the money of that I make, and spend so little on the kids. You know why? because she is saving money to buy a house! and she will, in two or three years; when the kids are already gone! instead of investing on their education, by the way, she pays just $450.00 for a project apartment; about 15% of her income. BUT, TRUST ME, THE COURT DOES NOT CARE!

So you think that's bad.

They have my support payments going directly to the corner crack peddler while the mother of my daughter is sitting in prison.

I am dead serious--THE CORNER DRUG DEALER IS USING THE ACCESS CARD BE BOUGHT FOR A VILE OF CRACK AND THE STATE OF PA COULD CARE LESS, MATTER OF FACT THEY WANT TO GIVE HIM MORE CASH, WHILE MY DAUGHTER GOES HUNGRY ON WHAT I HAVE LEFT.

The state could care less, especially when you are a minority, the ignore police reports, they ignore prison records, all they care about is money and not where it goes.
