A Pakistani cleric has issued a fatwa against Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari for flirting with US Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin.
Maulana Abdul Ghafar of Islamabad's Lal Masjid said that Zardari's behaviour was un-Islamic and that the President has shamed the entire nation.
The Maulana said that President Zardari's indecent gestures, filthy remarks and repeated praise of a non-Muslim lady wearing a short skirt is not only un-Islamic but also unbecoming of a head of state of a Muslim country.
He said that the manner in which Zardari shook hands with Sarah Palin and expressed his deep desire to hug her is intolerable and shameful.
"We are fighting the American war in our country and thousands of our people have been killed just to please Uncle Sam. Therefore, we demand that the military operation in the Pak-Afghan tribal areas be immediately stopped as it is creating hatred amongst the general public against the Pakistan army", he added.

Won't it all blow over quickly and be left as a bit of a joke? As an outsider I would like to know if people in Pakistan care because a cleric issues a fatwa or because of the issue of 'manners'.?

Any self-styled cleric can issue a fatwa but what has that to do with religion. We had the views of olympics from some saudi crackpots - this is no different.

The fatwa issued by the cleric against President Zardari is ridiculous. It shows the level of tolerance and understanding in the country. Pakistani media created storm in the cup of tea on this issue. This is not a new thing for us. In the past we have seen, when Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto (L) used to shake hands during her visits of western countries, she came under fire of criticism.
Pakistan is living in the stone age. This is so unfortunate.

Mr. Abid I think u are living in stone age because you form a stereotype about every Pakistani based on the views of few clerics. Do you understand fundamental rights? If clerics keep on ranting about Islam or whatever they might sound absurd but they have a right to free speech. Not like one has to listen to them, and worse judge the entire Pakistani community just looking at those nitwits.
Anyway I think that people shouldn't make a fuss about Zardari flirting with Pallin. True, but it's different from Benazir's handshakes. If you've seen the video she's almost a bit harrassed from Zardari's comments.

Now this fatwa is more like it. We, as Pakistanis, need to purge all such secularists. Everyone wants to destroy a tumor, if they get it in their body. These secularists are a tumor in Islamic Sharia. Let us irradiate them with gamma rays.
