FBI Justifies Sri Lanka war on Terror
It would be interesting for those sympathizers of terror organizations to know they indeed become indirect participants of the terrorist activities of such groups.
The LTTE - one such Terrorist outfit, the US citizens must be careful of for its extreme dangerous nature. The FBI expects the US citizens to be vigilant of the LTTE activities at home and anticipates the help of its citizen to report any suspicious activities of the LTTE in the US soil.
Here is the full story
TAMING THE TAMIL TIGERS
From Here in the U.S. 01/10/08As terrorist groups go, it has quite a résumé:
- Perfected the use of suicide bombers;
- Invented the suicide belt;
- Pioneered the use of women in suicide attacks;
- Murdered some 4,000 people in the past two years alone; and
- Assassinated two world leaders—the only terrorist organization to do so.
No, it’s not al Qaeda or Hezbollah or even HAMAS. The group is called the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) or the Tamil Tigers for short.
Needless to say, the Tamil Tigers are among the most dangerous and deadly extremists in the world. For more than three decades, the group has launched a campaign of violence and bloodshed in Sri Lanka, the island republic off the southern coast of India.
Its ultimate goal: to seize control of the country from the Sinhalese ethnic majority and create an independent Tamil state. Along the way, it has launched suicide attacks, assassinated politicians (including a government minister this week and even the Sri Lankan President), taken hostages, and committed all of kinds of crimes to finance its operations. The resulting civil war has taken the lives of nearly 70,000 Sri Lankans on both sides of the conflict since 1983 alone.
Why should you care? Certainly because of the suffering and bloodshed that the Tamil Tigers have caused. And because its ruthless tactics have inspired terrorist networks worldwide, including al Qaeda in Iraq. But also because the group has placed operatives right here in our own backyard, discreetly raising money to fund its bloody terrorist campaign overseas, including purchases of weapons and explosives.
The U.S. government has designated the Tigers a foreign terrorist organization, so their activities here are illegal. And we’re determined to stop them, using the full range of our investigative and intelligence capabilities.
In April, for example, we struck an important blow when our Joint Terrorism Task Force in New York arrested the alleged U.S. director of the Tigers. The man supposedly held several fundraising events at a church and various public schools in Queens and in northern New Jersey in 2004. He is also accused of arranging high-level meetings between the group’s leaders and U.S. supporters.
For More Information on Our Cases - January sentencing in Baltimore
- December sentencing in Baltimore
- April arrest in New York
- February Baltimore guilty pleaWe’ve also arrested another 11 Tamil Tiger-related suspects in the New York City region. And in Baltimore, following a multi-agency investigation, a pair of Indonesian men pled guilty and were sentenced recently for working with others to export surface to air missiles, state-of-the-art firearms, machine guns, and night vision goggles to the Tigers in Sri Lanka.
You can help by being careful with your donations. Like other terrorists, the Tigers have raised funds under a variety of cover organizations, often by posing as charities. A great deal of money, for example, was raised for the Tigers following the 2004 tsunami that devastated Sri Lanka and many other countries.
And please report any suspicious activities to your local field office or anonymously through this website.
According to the FBI,
Its ultimate goal: to seize control of the country from the Sinhalese ethnic majority and create an independent Tamil state.
There are approximatly 100 million tamils of various origins, who concider themselves as homeless, live in the world. Sri Lankan tamils consist of 11-12 % of the 20 million Sri Lankan population. 54% of these Tamils live in non conflict areas with other communities while the population in the capital city of Colombo too makes up of over 30% of the Tamil community. However, the LTTE implementing "ethnic cleansing" by chasing out the Sinhalese and then 100,000 Muslims from the nothern part Sri Lanka paved the way to it's ultimate goal of creation of mono-ethnic tamil homland In Sri Lanka.
Thease victims of the LTTE are still living in refugee camps for the past 20 years without a way of returning to their villages due to LTTE threts.
This conflict and the LTTE terrorism is far more deeper than a genuine stuggle to achive what is shown on the surface.

"Thirty-one years ago, a 20-year old Valvettiturai smuggler apprentice executed Mayor Alfred Duryappah "
Status update on that smuggler.
He attained a military rank of "Rear Admiral" because right now he is bravely "admiring the rear" of the tamil civilians - hiding behind them hanging on to his dear life - taken hostage by the "brave - but - always reverse-geared" terrorists nick named as "freedom fighters" of his terrorist organization.

The LTTE’s main source of recruitment has been conscription and abduction of women & children.
The whole world knows how the LTTE managed to survive the last 30 years. I list below just a fraction of them for the benefit of those who do not know. Out of HomeMaking money by stooping down the most immoral activates such as drug trafficking, human smuggling & arms trafficking by sea for various terrorist groups in the world
Collecting funds by extortion from the Tamil Diaspora threatening them of harm and torture to their family members in <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 />Sri Lanka
Abduction & detention of Tamils visiting the North of Sri Lanka form oversees until a ransom is paid in Europe to the ETTE agents for their release.
Successfully built a network of fulltime LTTE agents in the western countries to carry out all of the above activities to make the LTTE financially stronger.
The LTTE purposefully allowed these agents to swindle collections as long as they meet the stipulated income targets.
At HomeForceful conscription and engagement of children as little as 11 year olds in war. This is the way the LTTE poisons the minds of immature kids. The LTTE has done this for the last thirty years. Many leaders of the LTTE today are the ones grown up with the LTTE for the last 25 to 30 years from the childhood.
Forceful conscription of women and engagement of them in the battle field. Women are generally considered underprivileged in the orthodox male dominant Asian society. Therefore they are easy to be trained to accept things without questioning. Especially when they are helpless and under custody.
Use of civilian as shield. This has been seen in the entire history of the LTTE in every combat operation they faced. When civilians refuse to bear guns and fight, the LTTE herd them at gun point from place to place simply for the cover of the fighters.
Always kept the handful of leaders well protected in underground bunkers away form the battle field leaving the women & children to die for them. Since the LTTE ideology does not hold any ground amongst the majority of Tamils in Sri Lanka , This was deliberately done to ensure the safety of the leaders who should be there for further conscription, abduction & brainwashing of women & children
With millions of $ colleted through the front organizations and agents every month, the LTTE never had financial issues to acquire the latest technology in warfare. However, right from the beginning LTTE never had managed to build a human force willing & strong to face an advancing army. If 10% of the Tamils live in Sri Lanka believe and trust the LTTE, They have had enough man power to fight the SLA.at 13:24 on May 6th, 2009
René,
Hope this text by Mr. Satchi Sithanandan, a SL Tamil living in Frankfurt will give some insight.
"Thirty-one years ago, a 20-year old Valvettiturai smuggler apprentice executed Mayor Alfred Duryappah on the grounds of the historic Varatharajah Perumal Temple, Ponnalai on the western seaboard of the Jaffna peninsula. He was a peoples-friendly, down to earth man who had helped to modernize the City of Jaffna and improve its amenities as never ever before. He was, however, hated by the two Tamil political parties, the Federal and the Tamil Congress especially the former. The popularity of Mayor Duryappah and his election as Member of Parliament from the prestigious Jaffna City electorate were major contributory factors. As for the Tamil and Muslim people, his assassination was a major loss, a cruel reality that kept repeating through the years and the killers came from the same group of smuggler bandits who called themselves freedom fighters. The shot that was fired at Ponnalai’s sacred precincts now reverberates continuously with deadly consequences throughout the country and there seems no end to it.On that dreadful day with this tragic and meaningless killing of a good man, the Valvettiturai smuggler gang seeded terrorism in Sri Lanka."

Thanks for a good and timely post Bimsara.
One thing to add about the Muslim (Moore) community of the East, who have been living in refugee camps for over 20 years.
"Thease victims of the LTTE are still living in refugee camps for the past 20 years without a way of returning to their villages due to LTTE threts."
They have been resettled mostly after the Government took control of the East. Anyone who thinks a responsible government had no right to fight a Terrorist outfit which made these people homeless, and give them their homes back - should be totally insane.

Here are some other interesting facts about Sri Lanka
1. Although Tamil citizens make up only 12% of Sri Lanka’s population - 30% of Sri Lanka’s elected MPs are from a Tamil speaking community and 18% are directly Northern Tamils.
2. The religious, cultural and historical festivals of all communities in Sri Lanka are national holidays. This includes Christmas and Muslim festivals, religions practised by only 6% of the population.
3. Both Sinhala and Tamil are official languages of the State. All road signage, official documentation, transport and public as well as private facilities are found in fact in the three languages of English, Sinhala and Tamil. It is mandatory to study all languages in school (where facilities are available) and all new public servants must sit a mandatory exam in either Sinhala or Tamil (whichever language which is NOT their mother tongue).
4. Sri Lanka’s capital and largest city Colombo is only 40% Sinhalese - 60% are from Tamil speaking communities and 40% are exclusively Northern or Indian Tamils.
5. The Govt. has made a public apology for all the riots of the past and for errors of the state in creating the problem.
6. Sri Lanka has had top politicians from the Tamil community, inc. former Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgama and highways Minister Jeyeraj, both who were ironically assasinated by the LTTE.
7. Even after the conflict flared up in 2006 - following 6000 violations of the Ceasefire Agreement by the LTTE and only about 600 by the Govt. of Sri Lanka (recorded by the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission), an attempted assassination of the Army General by a PREGNANT Suicide Bomber and following a series of bomb attacks in Colombo and outside - the Sri Lankan govt. continued to provide gestures of goodwill to the LTTE to come to the negotiating table. This includes continuing their policy of attending to the health needs of LTTE leaders by flying them down to the best hospitals in Colombo for any treatments. Gratitude was often expressed through another bomb.
8. Both of Prabhakaran’s children were educated in State schools at the expense of Sri Lankan tax payers, whose own children had to be victims of bombings, etc. across the country. The Sri Lankan govt. held special exams for Prabhakaran’s children to sit for the O Levels and A Levels separately and enrolled them into State University. When security risks were feared, the Sri Lankan govt. also assisted and sponsored the children to travel to foreign universities for education. The eldest son, Charles Anthony, returned to Sri Lanka and started to attack the very citizens whose tax money and goodwill paid for his education and foreign travels, with the airplanes that the LTTE managed to acquire during the CeaseFire Agreement.
9. The recent restrictive access to aid agencies in the displacement camps or concentration camps (whatever one may call it), is only a restriction on vehicle usage within the camps and not any other aspect of their operation. This restriction o

This restriction only came about following incidents of people being smuggled out of these camps in aid agency vehicles. This was accepted by Gordon Weiss - UN Spokesman Sri Lankan Spokesman.
