Female university students are "perks of the job"

University women's groups in Britain are up in arms after a leading academic referred to female students as "perks of the job." In a Times article titled ‘The Seven Deadly Sins of the Academy’, Vice-Chancellor Kealey of Buckingham University claims, “Most male lecturers know that, most years, there will be a girl in class who flashes her admiration and who asks for advice on her essays.”

Did someone say 'sexism'? Yes, I think so. What a crying shame, that with all of the advances women have made in academia (and I say this as a female academic), we still have to put up with attitudes such as this which treat women as objects for men to enjoy in their positions of power.

He compares female students to strippers at the notorious London club Stringfellows and concludes with the reminder that it, as in that esteemed establishment, extracurricular desire should go no further than admiring from a distance, mysteriously admonishing the reader that “You should have learnt by now that all cats are grey in the dark.” What he means, I’m not sure. That all women are interchangeable? Maybe so. After all, it isn’t their brains he is interested in.

It is so hard for women to be taken as seriously as men in academia, and I feel that I need to work 10 times as hard as my male colleagues to be recognised. And then we have to put up with the likes of this creep's misogyny. And people wonder why feminists are still working so hard to combat this type of malevolence.

I think if women deserve respect, they need to earn it. Unfortunately there are a few of us who 'let the side down' by being tacky pin ups or flaunting themselves in stripclubs for lots of money, ironically some are trying to earn money for their university fees. They even get their kit off now for charity calenders. Glamour is a great lure. Then there are the uni students who get involved in orgies. They will say it is their feminist choice.  I think if women want to be 'respected' they need to earn it. Sleazy men, however, will think all women are 'tarts' anyway, having brains seems to be irrelevant.

Best thing for these pervy types is to avoid them at all costs, and keep your standards up:-)

They have to earn it?! In other words, they should sit there and keep their clothes on and their legs (and preferably their mouths) closed and do nothing that they want with their own bodies. Because women who enjoy sex and want to have sex let the side down? That’s a typical patriarchal notion that has consistently suppressed women in our society because it maintains that the rules for what men do with their bodies are vastly different to the rules for what women do with theirs. How about we live in a society where those rules aren’t different, where women are allowed to make their own decisions about what they do with their bodies (as men do), instead of being told that they should earn respect by stopping doing what is acceptable for others.

I would like it if people who rant would keep their mouths shut. Sleazy pervert women looking at male strippers, they should be exposed as perverts.
