WILD CHILD THE STORY OF FERAL CHILDREN

The newest of feral children has been uncovered in Siberia and removed from the home on Monday.  Five year old Natasha Mikhailova, who has eyes that shine like stars and a smile that melts the heart, was displaying many canine behaviors.

Natasha Mikhailova was kept locked in a room with dogs and cats for several years, causing her to behave like an animal. She does not speak, laps up her food and drink with her tongue, and walks on all fours.

Though living in filthy conditions in the same home as her father Viktor Lozhkin, 27, and grandparents in the Siberian city of Chita, child experts say she was treated as a family pet.

... the dogs sought to protect her. 'The child was living in absolute filthy conditions, the flat smells awful. There were a lot of animals, dogs and cats, and the girl was living with them.

'When we went into the flat we were almost knocked over by the stink.'

Natasha was wearing torn and soiled clothes.

Feral children are defined as follows...

A feral child is a human child who has lived away from human contact from a very young age, and has little or no experience of human care, loving or social behavior, and, crucially, of human language. Feral children are confined by humans (often parents), brought up by animals, or live in the wild in isolation.

There are over 100 cases in different parts of the world. It is not only confined to third world countries. The USA has seen 8 cases in the last 12 years, who have been isolated from human contact or "confined".  Canada's one case is five year old Jeffrey Baldwin, who was removed from his parents and placed in the care of grandparents who continued to neglect him. After his death from septic shock, there were significant changes made in the policy by children's aid societies in the granting of custody of children to relatives.

Baldwin and his sister were kept in a locked room at night with furnace vents shut, and when released were forced to eat with their hands from a mat on the floor.  James Mills, the boyfriend of Baldwin's aunt who also lived in the house, declared that Baldwin's grandmother did not love him or his sister, and that they were purely a "dollars and cents" matter, as his grandparents received social assistance for their care.] On the evening of November 30, 2002, his grandmother called 911 to report that he was not breathing. Upon arrival, emergency workers noticed that his body was "covered in sores, bruises and abrasions". His weight at death was slightly less than his weight at his first birthday, almost five years earlier.

Other cases include children from France, India, Uganda, Spain, Ukraine, and Russia.

Here is an extensive list.

It is almostĀ inconceivableĀ that this can still happen in the industrialized World today.

I feel very sorry for these children and their circumstances of how they become what they become due to the lack of love and care.

The ones that are found are often subject to further scrutiny by science. Though the one that worked with Genie seemed to be quite attached to her, they are discouraged in becoming involved. As nurses, we are told not to get attached. Show love but don't love... ???

This is heartbreaking to learn that human children are actually being treated worse than animals in today's "civilized" societies.

In that last link you gave, there were over 30 known cases just since 2000 - there's something just not right there!  So sad ...

It really does take a village to raise a child, and ALL people have to be accountable for our little ones, for watching over them.

Thanks for sharing this awful story, Sara Star. It's good that the authority found her before she grows older.

Until things like this cease to occur I don't see how we can justify calling ourselves, (humans) an enlighten people.

To allow the weakest among us to be treated like anamals. :(

I feel for her as she will only be studied further, and I'm not sure she'll ever be able to come back from this.
