Former Cuban president Fidel Castro has written an editorial in a Cuban newspaper praising Barack Obama, saying that US president has "noble intentions."
While Castro had kind words for Obama, he had less than flattering things to say about the US economy.
“I personally harbor no doubt of the honesty with which Obama expressed his ideas,” Castro wrote. “However, despite his noble intentions, some questions remain unanswered. Like, how can a wasteful, consumerist system protect the environment.”
In the past, Obama has expressed the desire to improve relations between the US and Cuba, and has talked of easing travel restrictions between the two countries.
Castro's editorial, which was can be viewed here in Spanish, then turned introspective, making reference to the fact that his physical and mental health may decay during the Obama administration.
"I have had the rare privilege of observing events over such a long time. I receive information and meditate calmly on those events," he wrote. "I expect I won't enjoy that privilege in four years, when Obama's first presidential term has ended."
