Fighting intensifies in S Ossetia
Georgian tanks have launched an attack on Tskhinvali, the capital of the breakaway province of South Ossetia, according to Russia's Interfax news agency.
Simultaneously, Georgian fighter jets attacked separatist positions in South Ossetia on Friday, Interfax news agency quoted the head of Russian forces in the region as saying.
It quoted Marat Kulakhmetov as saying that five Su-25 jets took part in the strike on the village of Tkverneti.
Russia is the main backer of South Ossetian separatists, and has a "peacekeeping force" in the region.
The fighting erupted on Friday as the UN Security Council held a late-night session to discuss the conflict.
Separatists defiant
The separatists, who have controlled South Ossetia since the early 1990s, vowed to repel the attack without calling for help from Russia.
"At about 3:30am (2330 GMT on Thursday) a tank attack was launched on the southern outskirts of Tskhinvali," Interfax quoted Eduard Kokoity, the South Ossetian separatist leader, as saying.
"A heavy battle is under way."

Kokoity described the attack on Tskhinvali as a "perfidous and vile" act by Mikheil Saakashville, the Georgean president.
At least 15 civilian were reported killed as Tskhinvali came under heavy Georgean shelling... ...OMG!!!

I think this is an important story and would benefit from other NowPublic contributors working on it. I've flagged it as News Wanted and invite others in relevant locations to look for more evidence. I just heard on CBC that two Russian jets were shot down by Georgian forces, but it's unconfirmed at the moment.

teritenn: to answer your question from an infrastructure point-of-view check out the pipelines map (below) used for the transit of petroleum products through the once soverign state of Georgia; secondly, and possibly a larger question is the threat of potentially trashing the concept of democracy of a soverign state by Russia, a classic "David vs. Goliath" kinda' bullying and then refuse to negotiate with their ligitmate elected leader. Russia has since 2005 taken many giant steps backwards, and today appears to be reasserting the ol' communist concept of... "what's mine is mine, and what's yours is negotiable."

This is a great shame for modern Russia to manage conflict situation like this! They consider themselves as great nation but their diplomatic level is zero. Tanks and guns are their weapon but not a word or tolerance!
Shame on Russia!

Georgia claims fighting ongoing
Tbilisi has claimed its towns and villages are still being bombed despite Dmitry Medvedev, the Russian president, calling a halt to five days of military action in Georgia.
Medvedev on Tuesday ordered Russian forces to cease operations in Georgia and its breakaway regions, saying Moscow had "punished Georgia enough for its attack on South Ossetia".
But Georgia said fighting was still taking place, including what are believed to have been mortar attacks on the city of Gori, about 60km from Tbilisi.
Russian forces were reported to be around 12km away from the town at the time of the blasts and denied attacking it.
Further north in the separatist capital of Tskhinvali, houses were still burning following the battles of the last week and Russian tanks and armoured personnel carriers patrolled the deserted streets.source: Al Jazeera and agencies

UPDATED ON: Wednesday, August 13, 2008/Russian army 'heading for Tbilisi'
Russian military vehicles have been heading towards the Georgian capital of Tbilisi, Al Jazeera has confirmed.
Al Jazeera's Alan Fisher tailed a convoy of Russian armoured vehicles on the road from the town of Gori, less than 60km from Tbilisi on Wednesday.
"Right in front me, no more than 100 metres away is an armoured personnel carrier with three Russian soldiers on top ... behind that there is a long convoy of Russian military vehicles," Fisher reported.
"They're not moving at a fast speed, but they are moving towards Tbilisi.
"It is only 60km from Gori to Tbilisi, but this doesn't look like an invasion force."
He later said the convoy had come to a halt, split in two and taken up artillery positions. A convoy of Georgian special forces was alsoreported to be heading for the area he said.

The Latest: Friday, Aug. 15, 2008
Mikheil Saakashvili, Georgia's president, has said that he has signed a European Union-brokered ceasefire agreement.
Speaking at a news conference in Tbilisi on Friday, Saakashvili criticised the West for not granting Georgia Nato membership earlier this year, saying Russia had stepped up its military presence in the region following the decision.
He also accused Russia of using cluster bombs and weapons of mass destruction during fighting which broke out last week in the breakaway region of South Ossetia.
The president's remarks came after nearly five hours of talks with Condoleezza Rice, the US secretary of state, regarding the EU-brokered ceasefire agreement.
The six-point deal was drawn up by France, and presented by Rice to Saakashvili.
The Georgian president said: "We will never, ever surrender, give up our freedom and territory, we will definitely get rid of these invaders for good. I am totally convinced of that."
Rice, also speaking at the news conference, said Russian forces should now leave Georgian territory.
