Final Arguments Begin in Cambie Street Merchant's Court Case
The following are my notes from attorney Cameron Ward’s closing argument today in the compensation trial for Susan Heyes of Hazel & Co., formerly located on Cambie Street. Ward’s opening was terminated when the building was suddenly evacuated due to a bomb threat. I missed words here and there, but pretty much got it down.

Ward: By way of introductory remarks, I’d like to start by sighting an old maxim from and English case decided in 1703, the maxim being equity will not suffer a wrong to be without a remedy. The courts today are a product of law and equity. It is our submission on the certain facts of this case, on the evidence, I respectfully submit that there can be little doubt that my client was wronged by the actions of the defendants. Those wrongs were principally two in nature. On the one hand, misrepresentations made by the defendants, reliance upon which caused my client loss and secondly the nuisance created by the actions of the defendants....

This is only the tip of the iceberg. A lot of this stuff has been going on in British Columbia the past five years. Keyword is "Big Fish Eat The Small Fish And That's Good and Fair." Big Business allied with government. An honest executive of a big corporation commented privately: "The System exacts revenge on the weakest link in the food chain." What's disturbing is not big government, or government authority, but government passing on its statutory power and authority to pseudo-public bodies or private corporations to evade scrutiny and public accountability. The ultimate in public deception. The lady is lucky to have found a good lawyer to represent her, most victims just resign themselves to their fate. Less than 10-percent of the people in this country can afford a lawyer when they're screwed, and very few can stand up for their rights against the government or big corporations...
