OK!, So you are not the type to join in at a TEA Party ... how about a rally to have cultural civility be considered when one makes improper and lopsided political jabs during night time television broadcasts?!

'Fire David Letterman' is not a demand that many expected to be heard about David Letterman until this week. But Fire David Letterman rallies are starting to pop up in New York, as protesters hope to get David Letterman fired with their rally on Tuesday.

CBS would hardly be expected to fire David Letterman, since he just became king of late night ratings this week. But that may have been due to David Letterman's controversial jokes about the Palin family, which sparked the desire to fire David Letterman in the first place.

Why doesn't Palin's husband make a tape and call the little SoB "outside"?

That is what I would have done had he done this to my wife. The men need to rap the knuckles of these Neanderthals hard and sharp. You know, so that it is harder for them to get around. :)

I would have invited him to a snowmachine race.

"cultural civility"?

Your sensibilities may think this is a funny standard to try to achieve ... until it comes to the ox that you cherish gets gored.

Actually, dunkleberg, I feel a bit insulted by your little snark and it just goes to prove how uncultured you really are - it really says more about you and what you believe than you think it says about yourself (hint: it is not positive).

I grew up in a rough neighborhood in Philadelphia. One of the things that most impressed me about the kids from the suburbs was what a bunch of smartmouths they were. They were also completely unconscious of just how sarcastic and unappealing and disrespectful they were. Apparently, they had been subject to a lot less threat of violence for being a smartmouth than was customary where I lived.

What they needed was what ancient Rome had a great supply of: "lectori" and "batone".

In ancient Rome, people in charge had assistants called "lectors" who used to carry "batons" and give "lectorings" or "lickings"  to those who needed them, instant painful lessons in good manners, civility and respect.

So, the "baton" was for beating one to instill good manners. The name comes from battere, to beat or to batter.

The lector, who beat you with that baton, giving you a "lectoring" (lecturing) or "licking" (as it got chewed down), his name came from the word lex, or law.

You learned good manners and respect from the threat of force or from force's direct application.

Of course, the Lettermans of the world do the same.

Palin dared to go against the grain, not of traditional Hubert Humphrey decent liberalism, but against modern liberalism, the ranting, cynical, rhetoric-heavy, reason-light version that came into existence in the late '60s as radicalization took hold in academia first, department by department, and then into the professions.

Palin did this by successfully mocking the left's idol of the ideal man, Obama, a person who represents what Plato would have called "the philosopher-king", a man who should rule by virtue of his reason and objectivity, and to whom all should bow.

Letterman and others have been acting as the lectori of Obama, wielding the cudgel of egregious mockery to teach "civility" to Palin and others who don't toe the line, such as Miss California or the women who should be "hate-f*cked" according to Playboy magazine distinguished experts on morality.

Modern libs try this here as well. But they don't succeed because we have some rules and we have some cudgels on our part as well. :)

Finally. He has used more people for fodder then anyone on late night television. Harvey Pekard comes to mine.

Great Story Edmund...twittering too will really bring this to even more than the tea bag

gathering that they refused to report.  A ralley in New York will even make Washington

corrupts think about their rhetoric too.  I hear rumblings ladies and gentlemen..

Ta Wanda!!!!   (That is from Green Fried Tomatoes...please rent it if you have not seen it)

It is about feminine energy awakened....this is not just parties either..this is an even bigger issue

politics.

Pretty hilarious, a woman who forced women in Alaska to pay for their own rape kits objects to a joke. Is she 5 years old? Miss smirky humorless attack machine needs to take her dog and pony show of vitriol and go play in the snow.

To nyctuber, get your facts straight.  You are deliberately spreading lies about Sarah Palin, particularly as regards the 'rape kit story.'  That's the thing about far left liberals, they simply do not care if what they say is true or not, if it sounds like what they WANT to hear, they will spew it to anyone that will listen.  You make me sick.

The same can be said about the far right. Lies about weapons of mass destruction brought about a war that cost thousands of lives.

I recently told CBS that I would never watch David Letterman again. So then he later "apologizes"; Yahoo reports this today, & then has a link directed to show a full video of the apology; ...however, when it gets to YouTube, you get a message that the video has been taken of it for "copyright" reasons. What kind of nonsense is this?!? ...And later, Yahoo realizes this and takes the link off its news site altogether. ...And not one time have I ever heard any of these SP haters posting to comment about how Willow feels about all this, or how its affecting her. Isn't she the real victim here?  I have 2 young girls of my own. They only are defending DL because of their hatred for Sarah! If ANY true parent heard anyone say a joke about their young daughter the way DL did about Willow, regardless of the sayer's "intent", I guarantee they would not be so apt to put it in a perspective that would favor DL. Such hypocrisy! People who use this situation to attack SP without any concern for Willow have absolutely NO credibility!

Can the people of the left separate legitimate criticism of Sarah Palin, for example, the rape kit controversy, from illegitimate mocking of members of her family about getting "knocked up" by A-Rod?

There are many legitimate criticisms to be made of the woman, but, if Letterman and the authors of the "hate-f*ck" the good-looking conservatives list in Playboy knew how to do that, they would.

See, they can only reduce everything to a stereotyped image, make a joke of it and reduce their fear that the person instills in them.

The mocking is a sign of both lack of capacity to mount a real criticism and lack of feeling function, i.e., that the mocking focuses on irrelevant aspects of the person's life, is designed to intimidate by treating the person as a non-entity, a "thing", and is a glaring contradiction to the banner-waved-high ideals of being "inclusive", "for women", and "taking the high road".

Years ago, Groucho Marx noted that the trend in today's humor was to denigrate others, whereas he told jokes about himself, such as "I would never join a country club that had someone like me a a member."

I actually agree with Roy here. Sexism and misogyny are still what they are, no matter whom they're directed at. Even if you hate Palin, condoning such things against her sends a message that, in part, you're condoning such actions against women in general, simply by justification of not agreeing with their politics.

A similar case is when many Obama supporters during the primaries, evidently "liberal", fell back on base sexism and misogyny to attack Hillary Clinton. So much for Democrats and progressive ideals.

A good article on this phenomenon (which they called "selective sexism") is here:

"Sexism against Conservative Women Is still Sexism"

Also here--normally "Where are the feminists NOW?" is a classic anti-feminist question people ask (since why do you have to wait for feminists to stand up against the wrong, if you're so incensed why can't you do it yourself?), but since it is pertinent to this issue...

"Where is the Outrage by Feminists on Letterman's Sexist Remarks?"

Personally, I think this entire thing has been blown out of proportion and taken up WAYYY too much more time, energy, bandwidth, and broadcast space than it should've.  I hate that Palin is using it and in part her daughter to drag up all the publicity she can get, and I hate that Letterman made us actually sympathize with such a person even a little bit (by being stupid and not specifying, since Bristol as a public figure and since used by Palin in her campaign, would've been fairer game politically if not tastefully).

I just wish that all the right-wingers who jumped to Palin's defense for the right reasons could apply their suddenly-clear reasoning to ALL women, not just when one of their own finds out what it's like. (And the same goes for the Playboy hit list.  NEVER thought I'd find myself nodding along with Michelle Malkin.)

It was a joke, period. It harmed no one. If you don't like Letterman's sarcastic sense of humor, then don't watch him. But don't feign ignorance over his benign intentions. Forcing rape victims to pay for their own rape kits, on the other hand, harms real people in the real world, psychologically, emotionally, and potentially physically. The idea that Letterman was addressing her 14 year old daughter is absurd and frankly opportunistic from a desperate, vicious Sarah Palin. Look up the difference between mocking and joking. Here's a hint: The way Sarah Palin talked about Barack Obama during her campaign is an excellent example of mocking. Pretty brutal, smirky mocking, at that.

You don't get it like dunkleberg doesn't get it.

Maybe it is time to take a break and get your head cleared up about this ... you are too close to the subject, or your mind is distorted, or you think an unprovoked public attack on any young women is OK with you and that what you need (along with David Letterman) are sensitivity classes.

I really think you have trouble with boundries and you need help.

I get it just fine. It was a joke. Religious extremists like Sarah Palin are no joke. She forced young women to pay for their own rape kits. The hypocrisy is mind boggling. The end.

joke or no joke it was crude and sexist beyond the pale. He has no right to get a pass on this one. Be it Palin or anybody else. If she was a African-American big Dave would have lasted only a second in getting his arse kicked off the air.

Just a joke?  So Willow lives with her head in a ground like an ostrich and has no feelings for this?  ...And she cannot even defend herself.  Put yourself in WILLOW's shoes.  ...But your hatred for Sarah Palin is so great, you can't even see the forest for the trees!  So what is a parent to do for a child like this?  You are so purposely naive!  You act like it was the case that Sarah said "Aha!  Now is an opportunity to capitalize on this situation for my selfish purposes!"  Do you have a daughter?  I have two.  If you don't, then of course, I'll never expect you to understand this.  ...But if you do, would you be posting these same comments if DL joked about YOUR daughter in this manner?  So if my underaged daughter came to me and said "This David Letterman is terrible.  He really hurt me.  I feel so publically humiliated.   I did not deserve this.", your saying that DL should be off the hook because he "meant" joking about my older of age daughter.  How stupid!   ...And what is a mother like Sarah to do when she hears her daughter say this?  That's right!  Parade her on all the TV stations so Willow can tell everyone just how she feels she's been hurt or even violated, and hurt and violate her more as a consequence!  That's the kind of small-minded, bigoted thinking from people like you vomit out!  Sarah Palin, regardless of her political affinities, spoke out as she did because it is her God-given duty to do so!   It's her moral responsibility as a parent to speak out in defense of her underaged child simply because that child cannot and is not able to defend herself on her own.  That's what parents are for, pea-brain!  But then again, you would read this and still not be convince, because you are the one that is living like an ostrich with your head stuck in the ground!

Watch out for Mothers defending their babies my video shows here!   I posted the Matt lauer interview to show our international members what the fuss is really all about too.

Charlie Law from The Hill Pundits Blog wrote the following:

The brand of humor that Letterman fell into Tuesday night — and I say “fell into” generously, as I suspect it reveals his normal state of mind — was despicable on all counts.

But any person who, on national television, calls her — or any woman — a slut and suggests the same of her teenager daughter is the lowest of the low

It brings to mind “Mad Men” episodes where the early-1960s advertising guys harass their female co-workers with non-stop sexual innuendo and outright verbal abuse.

It also shows just how thin is the veneer of political correctness among many who claim to speak for the progressive, hip segments of our society. If you want to see this kind of attitude in embryonic form, read through the annals of the Students for a Democratic Society and see how many of the men saw their female co-revolutionaries primarily as housekeepers and sex playmates.

We can do better, and we deserve better. It's time for Dave to go.

Actually, it's time for the Right Wing to go. Trying to paint David Letterman as a monster over a single joke (it was funny, btw) shows the vicious desperation of the Right Wing to force the US to bow to it's gay hating, women's rights hating, fundamentalist madness. It's not gonna happen.

Btw, 'Mad Men' is a parody of the times, which were indeed sexist. Are there any ADULTS left who can appreciate anything other than Bible verses?

When I was in college in New York that was one of the main reasons I left the SDS. The other was the rage and anger that prevailed in the leadership. They were worse then the fools in power.

I'm pretty sure Letterman is a terrorist.

We should prosecute him for war crimes.

Yup.

I'm as crazy as you people.

7
Edmund Jenks

... and after he is prosecuted for terrorist war crimes, he needs about 100 hours of sensitivity training classes!

Basically, David Letterman has morphed into an irrelevant, humorless 62 year old hateful progressive with nothing much else to say.

He said what he said - and it still isn't funny no matter which daughter accompanied Sarah Palin to the Yankee game.

Where is the outrage from Alex Rodriguez, the Yankee organization, CBS, and "so-called" Woman's Rights organizations ... not to mention Flight Attendants everywhere (male or female).

This situation is way beyond a double-standard ... it is the absence of standards and should repulse everyone who considers themselves civilized.

Don Imus paid a heavy price for an unscripted, off of the cuff remark whereas David Letterman had all of these comments planned out before the show, then placed on cue-cards, and the show was taped to be broadcast to all timezones - this was an intentional, hateful, and unprovoked attack. To suggest that any young female (14 years old) be the object of statuary RAPE and gets "Knocked-Up" should pay a heavy, heavy price as well.

0
nyctuber

The joke wasn't aimed at Palin's 14 year old daughter. It was aimed at the daughter WHO GOT KNOCKED UP. See how that works? They call it comedy.

The US isn't going to be transformed into a humorless Bible thumping borefest where comedians need to be bland Jesus worshiping robots. Get used to the fact that the Religious Right is losing it's grip on government and society in general.

I am trying not to shout because I do know that you have NOTHING blocking your ears ... but that it is your MIND that has NOTHING and is BLOCKED - What!? this isn't FUNNY? It's COMEDY, DON'T YOU SEE!

... actually, you could use some sensitivity training yourself.

As for the rest of your tired, insensitive rant ... it is riddled with Soros, Progressive template assumption and frankly puts you out there as less than a shallow dolt not to be considered.

Before your weighing in on this issue of David Letterman, I judged you as a person who actually thought about the responses they argued and therefore, was a positive contribution to the mix here (or anywhere) at this Crowd Powered News outlet. You have now outed yourself as a ... sexist, insensitive gender-bigot who lacks debating and position articulation skills.

what!? this isn't funny. it's comedy, don't you see.

Sarah Palin's bid for VP mainly consisted of one long, arrogant, smirky attack on Obama. She's a disgusting human being, and is now trying to use a joke to further her vicious Right Wing agenda. Palin thinks victims of rape who need abortions should be treated like dirt. Does David Letterman? Nope. The cognitive dissonance being employed here is straight out of the Karl Rove handbook.

2
It's Amazing

It's truly amazing...We all agree that people in the public are fair game. However, when things were brought to light about Mrs. Obama's comments about how she wasn't proud of this country, the Left  (including then candadate Obama)as well some on the Right thought it was inappropriate to say anything negative about Mrs. Obama no matter how true it was. Children of candadates have traditionally been "off limit" except when it comes to the Left. They attempted to do harm to the Bush girls as well so I guess it only seem natural to them that Letterman's comments are OK. It doesn't matter whether or not he was talking about the Palin's 14 year old or Bristol Palin. It was definitely inappropriate and he never did apologize only made some lame explanation between the ages of the two Palin girls so in his small mind thought it was certainly ok. "He who is without sin cast the first stone"..oh that's right this is the same group who wants God out of our society..so what do you expect. Letterman should be fired for his poor judgement and slimy attempt at humor.
