I actually agree with Roy here. Sexism and misogyny are still what they are, no matter whom they're directed at. Even if you hate Palin, condoning such things against her sends a message that, in part, you're condoning such actions against women in general, simply by justification of not agreeing with their politics.

A similar case is when many Obama supporters during the primaries, evidently "liberal", fell back on base sexism and misogyny to attack Hillary Clinton. So much for Democrats and progressive ideals.

Also here--normally "Where are the feminists NOW?" is a classic anti-feminist question people ask (since why do you have to wait for feminists to stand up against the wrong, if you're so incensed why can't you do it yourself?), but since it is pertinent to this issue...

Personally, I think this entire thing has been blown out of proportion and taken up WAYYY too much more time, energy, bandwidth, and broadcast space than it should've.  I hate that Palin is using it and in part her daughter to drag up all the publicity she can get, and I hate that Letterman made us actually sympathize with such a person even a little bit (by being stupid and not specifying, since Bristol as a public figure and since used by Palin in her campaign, would've been fairer game politically if not tastefully).

I just wish that all the right-wingers who jumped to Palin's defense for the right reasons could apply their suddenly-clear reasoning to ALL women, not just when one of their own finds out what it's like. (And the same goes for the Playboy hit list.  NEVER thought I'd find myself nodding along with Michelle Malkin.)

Actually, dunkleberg, I feel a bit insulted by your little snark and it just goes to prove how uncultured you really are - it really says more about you and what you believe than you think it says about yourself (hint: it is not positive).

I grew up in a rough neighborhood in Philadelphia. One of the things that most impressed me about the kids from the suburbs was what a bunch of smartmouths they were. They were also completely unconscious of just how sarcastic and unappealing and disrespectful they were. Apparently, they had been subject to a lot less threat of violence for being a smartmouth than was customary where I lived.

What they needed was what ancient Rome had a great supply of: "lectori" and "batone".

In ancient Rome, people in charge had assistants called "lectors" who used to carry "batons" and give "lectorings" or "lickings"  to those who needed them, instant painful lessons in good manners, civility and respect.

So, the "baton" was for beating one to instill good manners. The name comes from battere, to beat or to batter.

 The lector, who beat you with that baton, giving you a "lectoring" (lecturing) or "licking" (as it got chewed down), his name came from the word lex, or law.

You learned good manners and respect from the threat of force or from force's direct application.

Of course, the Lettermans of the world do the same.

Palin dared to go against the grain, not of traditional Hubert Humphrey decent liberalism, but against modern liberalism, the ranting, cynical, rhetoric-heavy, reason-light version that came into existence in the late '60s as radicalization took hold in academia first, department by department, and then into the professions.

Palin did this by successfully mocking the left's idol of the ideal man, Obama, a person who represents what Plato would have called "the philosopher-king", a man who should rule by virtue of his reason and objectivity, and to whom all should bow.

Letterman and others have been acting as the lectori of Obama, wielding the cudgel of egregious mockery to teach "civility" to Palin and others who don't toe the line, such as Miss California or the women who should be "hate-f*cked" according to Playboy magazine distinguished experts on morality.

Modern libs try this here as well. But they don't succeed because we have some rules and we have some cudgels on our part as well. :)

Can the people of the left separate legitimate criticism of Sarah Palin, for example, the rape kit controversy, from illegitimate mocking of members of her family about getting "knocked up" by A-Rod?

There are many legitimate criticisms to be made of the woman, but, if Letterman and the authors of the "hate-f*ck" the good-looking conservatives list in Playboy knew how to do that, they would.

See, they can only reduce everything to a stereotyped image, make a joke of it and reduce their fear that the person instills in them.

The mocking is a sign of both lack of capacity to mount a real criticism and lack of feeling function, i.e., that the mocking focuses on irrelevant aspects of the person's life, is designed to intimidate by treating the person as a non-entity, a "thing", and is a glaring contradiction to the banner-waved-high ideals of being "inclusive", "for women", and "taking the high road". 

Years ago, Groucho Marx noted that the trend in today's humor was to denigrate others, whereas he told jokes about himself, such as "I would never join a country club that had someone like me a a member."

I am trying not to shout because I do know that you have NOTHING blocking your ears ... but that it is your MIND that has NOTHING and is BLOCKED - What!? this isn't FUNNY? It's COMEDY, DON'T YOU SEE!

... actually, you could use some sensitivity training yourself.

As for the rest of your tired, insensitive rant ... it is riddled with Soros, Progressive template assumption and frankly puts you out there as less than a shallow dolt not to be considered.

Before your weighing in on this issue of David Letterman, I judged you as a person who actually thought about the responses they argued and therefore, was a positive contribution to the mix here (or anywhere) at this Crowd Powered News outlet. Maybe it is time to take a break and get your head cleared up about this ... you are too close to the subject, or your mind is distorted, or you think an unprovoked public attack on any young women is OK with you and that what you need (along with David Letterman) are sensitivity classes.

I wrote this to CBS re David Letterman's crude and crass comments:   First of all, the so-called "jokes" were tasteless, crude and insulting!  Furthermore, his later attempted "explanation" that he meant Sarah Palin's older daughter, when he was clearly talking about her younger daughter who was accompanying Mrs. Palin at the game, was rather lame - at best.  Even the dumbest hillbilly understood who he meant!  Maybe we should come up with our own jokes about his own robbing the cradle and creating bastard children?    Since I don't watch much from CBS to begin with, any threat of mine to stop watching is meaningless.  I stopped watching CBS news years ago, when Dan Rather hypocritically repulsed - almost violently - other journalists when they did the same him to him that he normally did to others.  I don't remember what the issue was, but, it was something for which Mr. Rather would have rather not done - pun intended!   What I can do, as an individual, is to recommend to my friends and all email contacts, and for them to forward the same notion, is to write to any and all advertisers on CBS that I will not buy their products until CBS fires this crass individual.    I can't understand how and why CBS has gone so far as to allow itself to become an elitist leftwing propagandizer!  CBS used to be reasonably honest in its reporting of news and reasonably respectful of people in office.  Now, it has joined the ranks of purveyors of yellow journalism, like the "New Yuck Times", whose motto is "all the crap we want to print - whether true or not".  When did the liberal media suddenly get the impression it was their duty to sully good people?  When did it become the "norm" to lead its audience in moral and ethical decay?   So, I strongly recommend you get rid of this character - David Letterman - and return the show to comedy/talent/whatever, in the same manner as it used to be conducted by Johnny Carson - clean impartial comedy.   

Since when is appropriate to launch verbal sexual attacks on a 14 yr. old girl?  Letterman's position as a comic ABSOLUTELY  does come with responsibility to protect children!!!  It is no longer comedy when he alludes to forcecd sexual activity with a child, what in the h---is wrong with this man's morals?  He has exhibited some sort of sick obsession with the Palin women for months, and this is absolutely not acceptable on any level.  Lettermanshould be fired.  Enough already.

It's truly amazing...We all agree that people in the public are fair game. However, when things were brought to light about Mrs. Obama's comments about how she wasn't proud of this country, the Left  (including then candadate Obama)as well some on the Right thought it was inappropriate to say anything negative about Mrs. Obama no matter how true it was. Children of candadates have traditionally been "off limit" except when it comes to the Left. They attempted to do harm to the Bush girls as well so I guess it only seem natural to them that Letterman's comments are OK. It doesn't matter whether or not he was talking about the Palin's 14 year old or Bristol Palin. It was definitely inappropriate and he never did apologize only made some lame explanation between the ages of the two Palin girls so in his small mind thought it was certainly ok. "He who is without sin cast the first stone"..oh that's right this is the same group who wants God out of our society..so what do you expect. Letterman should be fired for his poor judgement and slimy attempt at humor.
