Fire in Dhaka Bangladesh Kills At Least 77 As Apartments Burn
It is Believed That At Least 77 People Are Dead and Dozens Injured After a Fire Ripped Through Several Apartment Buildings in Dhaka Bangladesh
The Bangladesh Daily Star is reporting that 61 people have been killed in the fire in the Najirabazer area, but many more are feared dead as people were trapped inside the burning buildings.
It is believed that the fire started after an electronic transformer exploded according to MSNBC, and a three-storey building went up in flames. The fire then spread to nearby apartment buildings and some sources say as many as 20 complexes were affected. The buildings in this area are close together and that helps the fire to spread easier. It is not known exactly how many people have died at this time, but many more are in critical condition in hospital.
The fire is believed to be under control, but firefighters are still working to free trapped residents and put out the flames.
One resident told the Star:
“I was having dinner. Suddenly I heard a huge bang and found the flames spread to two to three nearby buildings,” said Rahima Begum, resident of a building.
On the BBC News Website, a doctor named Imrul Hasan said that he has seen 45 bodies laid out on the road and that most people seem to have died from smoke inhalation.
"The number [of dead] is rising every moment," he said.
