A first ever Costco store opened in Manhattan, New York. The new store located at 116th Street and FDR Drive opened its doors to customers today. It is the fourth Costco store in New York City -- others being in Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island. Until recently, the space in Manhattan was too expensive to rent for Costco. But, the ongoing economic crisis is blamed for an increasing number of warehouse stores opening in the downtown areas of upscale metropolises.

Costco executives say the new Manhattan store is a big deal for the company.

“This is a big deal for us,” Joe Portera, an executive vice president and chief operating officer of the eastern and Canadian division, said yesterday in an interview at the new store. “We’ve been trying to get in forever. It’s very important that we do another one.”

The Manhattan store will be substantially smaller than a regular Costco store. It will also carry more high-end products to tap into the more affluent customer base in the neighbourhood. Eventually, Cotsco is looking to open additional stores in Manhattan.

Cotsco is the fifth largest retailer in the United States with over 400 locations throughout the country.
