Essence Magazine celebrates First Lady Michelle Obama's dedication to Washington, D.C. by taking a look at her most memorable and inspiring moments.

Growing up on the Southside of Chicago has clearly given First Lady Michelle Obama a different perspective. Since her first day in her role as First Lady, she has made it her mission to bridge the gap between the haves and the have-nots in Washington, D.C. She is dedicated to reaching out to her neighbors in an unprecedented, hands-on and personal way.

GOP leaders however want to know what Michelle Obama is up to in the area of her policy work. House Representatives are pushing for a change in federal law that could force the First Lady to disclose more of her policy work.

"The GOP effort is being led by the ranking member of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), whose initial salvo was rebuffed recently at a contentious committee markup session. Under Issa’s amendment, any government policy group that Mrs. Obama or another first spouse regularly participates in would be subject to a law requiring meetings to be announced in advance and, in most instances, public." Hi, jazzyazzay! Thank you for reading, commenting, and for the recommendation! I'm curious though why you "...dont think they will let her go too far in helping the poor folks."

Its still a mans world when it comes to goverment,Woman are more emotional and compassionate when it comes to actually doing good deeds, Am afraid when its Men in the drivers seat, so to speak they will only let her go so far in helping the poor.

Since time imortal all goverments have done is try to keep the poor poorer. As the rich get richer the current financial situation and economy around the world,is just the tip of the iceberg. I am not a man hater or feminist with my veiws I simply believe what I witness when people have tried to deal with goverment offices here in the UK. As I write this I am watching the news about the G 20 summit in London and the place is full of protesters particulary against the Banks and a lot of old aged pensioners have turned up to make there point clear also they have more than they care to swallow with regard to their pension funds bank charges heating cost ect.Yep the times they are a changing especially in the UK people dont allow excuses anymore they want action, not talks on talks that have already been walked.

Hi, jazzyazzy! Thanks for responding to my question. I would like to think that it is not the case that "...when its Men in the drivers seat, so to speak they will only let her go so far in helping the poor."

However, the GOP is insisting on greater transparency in, not only First Lady Obama's public work, but future First Lady's as well.  Some believe President Obama will take this personally (see the story at the link).
