Israel and Syria with the help of the Turks have declared today that they are discussing peace and have agreed on discussing the issue of the Golan Heights for the first time in 10 years.

The Syrian foreign minister went as far as declaring that Israel has agreed to give back the disputed Golan as agreed in Madrid confrence to the Syrians and  that the talks between them are being  held in Ankara Turkey.

The news of this new peace deal hits the Israeli public by surprise but not many are fooled by the timing of the annoucment, tonight at 2000 local Jerusalem time Ehud Olmert is conducting a press confrence regarding his latest bribe accusation.

The Golan issue is as many Israelis see it is just a way for Prime Minister Olmert to change public opinion from his latest bribe taking scandell.

Would it work? probably !

Israeli politics  are full of these tricks and deals and the public has accepted them as the way politicians work.

In the Golan Heights life go`s on as usual new houses are built and residents are not excited by the latest devolepments.

Time will tell if these talks will succeed but as Pm olmert said this evening talking is always a better option from shooting at each other.

I agree with you moonwolf but as Olmert said this evening in his speach it`s always better to be talking to your`e enemy than shooting at him.

I was of the understanding that the Golan Heights were of utmost importance for Israel's defense.

My money is on this leading to nothing, except maybe another shooting war.
