The five people killed in Wattala were security personnel and 15 people have been reported wounded when a suicide bomber detonated an explosive near a checkpoint outside of a market.

The victims were members of the Civil Defence Force. No group has claimed responsibility at this time.

Five members of the paramilitary Civil Defence Force (CDF) were killed and others wounded in the attack at a checkpoint manned by them in the Colombo suburb of Wattala, a police official said.

'It was a suicide bombing,' a police officer said. 'We have sent about 15 people to hospital and recovered five bodies of CDF men.'

Police are investigating the explosion in Wattala.

Sri Lanka state media is now reporting that five people are dead and four injured after a suicide bomber blew himself up at a checkpoint.
