Washington, D.C. (ANTARA News) - Five former US ambassadors to Indonesia are to take part in a panel discussion on various aspects of former President Soeharto`s regime here on Friday (Saturday in Indonesia).

The five former ambassadors are Edward Masters (posted in Indonesia from 1977 to 1981), Paul Wolfowitz (1986-1989), John C. Monjo (1989-1992), Robert L. Barry (1992-1995) and J. Stapleton Roy (1996-1999).

It is still not known on what particular topics each of the former US envoys would talk.

Organized by the US-Indonesia Society, the discussion will be moderated by Prof Karl D. Jackson, director of Southeast Studies at Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies of John Hopkins University.

According to information from the US-Indonesia Society, the speakers will likely touch on many aspects, including the New Order`s policies, Soeharto`s life style and incidents they had experienced during their assignments in Indonesia.

Unconfirmed reports said Indonesian Ambassador to the United States Sudjadnan Parnohadiningrat would also attend the event. (*)

Interesting stuff.  Suharto is a loaded topic.  He's a quintessential example of the "stewardship theory" to modernization, but the East Timor issue certainly puts a skew on things.  He certainly lit a fire under Indonesia's economy, though.
