A fire in Brixton in south London has disrupted transport services around the capital today following a fire opposite the Brixton underground station.

At its height, about 75 firefighters were at the scene, where a shop and a flat on Brixton Road were on fire.

About a quarter of the ground floor was alight as well as part of the first floor of the building.

Nobody was reported hurt. Brixton tube station is currently closed and Brixton Road has been partially cordoned off to traffic.

I think this is an important story and would benefit from other NowPublic contributors working on it. I've flagged it as News Wanted and invite others in relevant locations to look for more evidence.

I heard it was started by a toaster in a flat upstairs.

Glad it didn't spread to Morleys, next door, which is a historic Brixton landmark and one of the first department stores in London
