Flood In China Coal Mine Traps 23 People

The Associated Press out of Beijing, China is reporting that 23 people were trapped in a flooded coal mine in central China. Officials are saying that the mine in Yuzhou city in the Henan province was flooded on early Sunday morning.

The report cited local authorities as saying that many of the workers managed to escape, while a rescue operation was under way to save the trapped workers at the Fushun coal mine.

The official Xinhua News Agency stated that more than 50 people were working in the mine at the time of the flood. The Xinhua News Agency has said that the mine is owned by the Hebi Coal Industry Co. Ltd. is based in Hebia, a city in Henan.

A total of 3,786 Chinese coal miners died in gas blasts, flooding and other accidents in 2007, down 20 percent from 2006.

This is the most recent incident in a series of accidents that have been plaguing the mining industry in China. According to BBC, China is the world's largest producer and consumer of coal.
