Florida: Janitor Rescues Abandoned New-Born Baby from Trash Pile
An observant janitor in Kendall, Fl., has rescued a newborn baby from a garbage dumpster after hearing a cry. The little baby boy was still attached to the placenta and umbilical cord and was found wriggling in the garbage by hero, Cleveland Massie. The baby tagged, "Baby Kendall", or "Baby John Doe" by the police was just one hour old when found.
Police have appealed for a witness, a man, who may have seen the woman dispose of the baby to come forward.
The real tragedy is that Florida has a Safe Haven Law, passed after a rash of neonatals found dumped in Florida's canals and waterways, whereby a distressed mother can abandon her baby at any fire station "with no questions asked".

The newborn, dubbed by cops ''Baby Boy Doe,'' was found Monday night by a janitor in a Dumpster at 9150 SW 87th Ave. The janitor flagged down passing paramedics, who saved the crying newborn, his umbilical cord still attached.

“I can’t express … You see I'm getting emotional now,” he said.
Massie, who said he does not feel like a hero, said he heard the baby crying and flagged down the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue for help.
“I first thought it was a baby kitten, but I know the kitten would make a scratching noise,” Massie said. “When I dropped the bag inside the Dumpster, I heard the baby cry. Then I got the flashlight and I went and shined it over in the Dumpster and there was the umbilical cord and everything in the Dumpster.”
Authorities said the child was apparently only an hour or so old. A firefighter went inside the Dumpster and brought out the baby boy, who still had the umbilical cord and placenta attached.
“It’s dark, so we had to shine a flashlight in there and we actually saw a little baby in there,” Warner said. “We saw a little body wiggling and then eventually he cried and so I went into the Dumpster with the help of my captain and my other partner and I just pulled him out.”
The baby, now known as Baby Kendall, appeared to be healthy but was taken to Baptist Hospital.
“I'm just happy that I was able to save the life and the baby is doing fine,” said Massie, who works a four-hour shift each night.
KENDALL (CBS4) ― A newborn baby is hospitalized after being found Monday night in a dumpster behind Baptist Hospital in Kendall.
A janitor found the baby, with its umbilical cord still attached, around 8:35 p.m. when he heard a cry and then found the infant in the garbage. The janitor ran to a nearby Miami Dade Fire Rescue truck for help.
Miami Dade Fire Rescue Captain George Alvarez couldn't believe it.
"In this profession you see a lot of stuff, but there are a few calls that really stick out and this is one of them. You know, you don't expect to find babies in dumpsters, that's a new life," said Alvarez.
The baby, which was taken to Baptist Hospital to be checked, was in good condition according to doctors.
Police are now looking for the child's mother.
