Mazak Limestone Mine: Miner Trapped Underwater in Florida Mine Collapse

An open mine collapsed during blasting in Sumter County central Florida. Rescue workers are working to get to the trapped miner using cranes. The Mazak Mine, located along State Road 50 at County Road 469, is a phosphate mine.

The rescue team, should they recover the miner alive, must prepare for resuscitation and hypothermia.

The mine is located in Bushnell in Sumter County, almost 40 miles south of Ocala.

Sumter County Sheriff's Office Lt. Kevin Hofecker told WESH TV Thursday that blasting was under way when some land gave way underneath the victim. The minder has not been identified.
