See here for the current story on the issue. 8 substations have failed, leaving 4 million Floridians in the dark. The cause is still unknown but terrorism has been ruled out.

a domino effect in the South Florida power grid which caused a massive outage along the east coast, from the Daytona Beach area into Monroe County.

CBS4's Michael Williams says FPL sources told him the failure was likely the reason for the failure, but FPL is still trying to determining the cause of the failure.

Florida Power & Light is reporting massive power outages throughout South Florida, including Miami, Doral, Westchester, and Pembroke Pines. Reports of outages extended into Palm Beach, and across the state of Florida.

The outage hit shortly after 1 p.m., and at first appeared to be a local issue in South Florida. However, calls from across the state south of Orlando started complaining of power problems, and the scope of the problem quickly widened.

The Miami-Dade Police Department said it is hearing that FPL is experiencing a massive transmission failure from Daytona Beach to Miami.

CNN reports some areas of Palm Beach county are without power.

The Florida Highway Patrol office in Doral, west of Miami, learned of the problem the way most people did, when the lights went out. Spokesman Lt. Pat Santangelo said the regional office does have telephone service, and troopers are still on patrol.

As of 6 PM EST, Florida Power and light reports that Monroe, Miami-Dade and Broward Counties all have had their power restored.  The blackout was a result of a fire that started at an FPL substation located at 9200 Flagler St in Miami. An estimated 2 million customers state wide lost power this afternoon at 1:08 pm.  FPL reported that the fire triggered a safety system designed to protect the system as a whole, once the Turkey Point Nuclear Power Facility detected the fire it automatically shut down in order to save itself, in doing so 8 other substations wer shut down.  FPL reports that the system did exactly what it was supposed to do, limit damage to a specific area.  The Miami-Dade EOC reports that the blackout is causing additional traffic problems to ones South Floridians deal with everyday.  A few have speculated that the fire was an act of terrorism, Law Enforcement and FPL officials deny any act of terrorism took place.
