The Great Forest Park Balloon Glow 2008

What I'll be doing this weekend! It's a Balloon Glow/Race/fir... on Twitpic

The 37th Annual Great Forest Park Balloon Race began today and will run from Sept. 18-20 at Central Field in Forest Park in St. Louis, Missouri. All events are free and the race will stream online free of charge as well.

At the festival, not only will you see 70 balloons floating over the city of St. Louis, but also on Friday evening, the Balloon Glow will take place. Dozens of pilots will inflate their balloons, and as the night gets dark, the glow from the balloons creates a breathtaking view of inflated balloons lighted by their burners. The night will end with a fireworks display beginning at 9 p.m.

The main event is a classic "hounds and hare" balloon race, with the Energizer Bunny Balloon as the perfect "hare." At 4:30 p.m., the Bunny launches from Central Field and gets a short head start, before being chased by the other 70 balloons. Their goal is to follow the Bunny's route, and, after the Bunny Balloon lands, drop a bag of birdseed as close to its landing site as possible. The one who comes closest to the Bunny wins the race.
