Gov. Mark Sanford, R-SC, resigned Wednesday as the chair of the RepublicanGovernors Association after admitting his affair with an Argentinian woman.

Later that night, Rachel Maddow was joined by Daily Beast contributor and former media adviser for President George W. Bush, Mark McKinnon, to assess the scandal’s impact on the Republican Party.

“It’s always hypocrisy that’s the real sin in these things,” McKinnon said. “He should resign because he’s lost all credibility to govern. I think he needs to resign because he needs to go pay attention to his family.”

McKinnon added, “We shouldn’t have to remind these guys of their firmly held convictions.”

At the Daily Beast, McKinnon writes, “Mark Sanford is not just toast. He’s charcoal.”
