Baltimore City Police say former city councilman Ken Harris was shot to death in Northeast Baltimore early this morning.

It happened around 1:30 a.m., in the 1500 block of Havenwood Road outside of the Haven Lounge.

Baltimore City Police tell ABC2NEWS.COM that Harris went to jazz club to borrow a corkscrew from the owner. The club's owner, who is friends with Harris, told police that when he and Harris returned to the front of the business three masked men were trying to rob the lounge.

The owner says Harris ran to his car and was shot once in the chest.

Police say Harris was able to drive out of the parking lot but crashed on Argonne Drive.

Harris was taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after 2 a.m.
