It is hard to believe that Fidel Castro, an infamous revolutionary and a defiant long-term leader of communist Cuba, is now a feeble, gray-haired man. Castro is turning 82 today, and for the first time in over thirty years he won’t be celebrating his Birthday in the Presidential Palace. Castro has officially stepped down (or more appropriately “abdicated”) as the President of Cuba in February of this year. He foresaw his health crumbling, and prudently secured Cuban presidency for his brother Raul Castro. And, although Fidel Castro is not involved in state affairs anymore and does not make many public appearances, the people of Cuba sleep better knowing that the Father of Revolution is still around. Castro’s invisible presence is a warrant that things will remain the way they have always been with minimal perturbations and changes. So, while Fidel Castro is officially gone from the political center stage, the idea that the old good Comandante is alive and well is sure at the back of every Cuban’s mind.
Former Cuban leader Fidel Castro has turned 82 years old.

The former president marked his birthday privately Wednesday. Mr. Castro has not been seen in public in more than two years.

In July 2006, he underwent emergency surgery for intestinal bleeding and ceded power to his younger brother, Raul, on what was then a provisional basis. After nearly a half-century in power, Mr. Castro permanently stepped down in February and Raul Castro was formally named president.

Cuban Olympic athletes Wednesday sent birthday messages to Fidel Castro from Beijing, and Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez sent him a portrait of South American independence figure Simon Bolivar.

You are welcome to use this photo. But you should be aware that it is not a photo of Fidel Castro. I do have photos of Fidel Castro, but this is not one of them. This is a man I spotted on the streets of Havana one night.

Watched the City of Gold the other day, fabulous depiction of Fidel's rise to premiership. I like your intro and I agree to a lot of Cubans, Fidel will live as long as Che -- in their hearts and mind. :)
