Tariq Aziz sentenced to death by hanging

Tariq Aziz: Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Under Saddam Hussein Death Sentence, By Hanging (video)

Tariq Aziz is likely one of last living reminders of the Saddam Hussein regime. Now, Tariq Aziz along with two others have ben sentenced to hang by Iraq's Supreme Criminal Court.

The country's Supreme Criminal Court has issued a statement saying Aziz was sentenced to hang for his role in persecuting religious parties.

The court also issued death sentences for former Interior Minister and intelligence chief Sadun Shakir and Hussein's former secretary, Abd Hammud.

Tariq Aziz was serving a jail sentence for his involvement in the expulsion of Iraqi Kurds from Northern Iraq and for his role in the killing of dozens of merchants in 1992.

Tariq Aziz, 74, was one of the few Christians in a position of power in the Ba'athist Party. A fact that was apparently exploited by Saddam Hussein.

he Vatican urged Iraqi authorities not to carry out the death sentence against Aziz, a Christian. This, the Vatican spokesman said in a statement, would help reconciliation, peace and justice.

The Vatican did not rule out the possibility of making a humanitarian intervention on behalf of Aziz, but said this would be done through diplomatic channels, the spokesman added.

Sahib said Aziz and four other defendants in the case who were also sentenced to death were expected to appeal against the decision. Iraqi law provides for an automatic appeal for all death-sentence and life-imprisonment cases, even if the defendants do not lodge an appeal themselves...
