Four police officers shot in Oakland California; suspect killed

Update: the fourth officer, John Hege, has died in hospital following the shootings described below.

Update: Three officers confirmed killed and one in critical condition. The suspect was also killed.

Killed Saturday were motorcycle officer Sgt. Mark Dunakin, 40, and Sgts. Ervin Romans, 43, and Daniel Sakai, 35, both members of the SWAT team. The other motorcycle officer, John Hege, 41, was in grave condition, officials said.

The suspect, whom police identified as Lovelle Mixon, 26, of Oakland, shot at the SWAT officers, who "returned fire in defense of their lives," said Officer Jeff Thomason, a department spokesman. The suspect, who police believe was acting alone, was killed.

Update: 5:21pm PST

It is now being reported that four officers were shot and the suspects are still at large. One suspect was wounded and one police officer was shot and is in critical condition.

Later, two more police officers were shot when they took one suspect in to custody. Their conditions are not known at this time.

Previous reporting:

Two Oakland California police officers have been shot dead during a traffic stop near the Eastmont substation this afternoon.

The police officers stopped a car with two people inside, and the suspects shot the two officers and ran from the scene on foot.

Other police are searching for one of the suspects and have closed off roads around that area.

Investigators have not yet determined what caused the shooting.

The condition of the officers are not known at this time.
