Fourteen die in Nepal bus plunge

At least 14 people were killed and 26 others injured Friday when a bus careered off a mountain highway in Nepal. Nepal has shoddy old vehicles and that leads to high number of road accidents. The bus was en route to Kathmandu from the south when it plunged 150 metres into a river.

At least 14 people were killed and 38 others injured when a passenger bus met with an accident at Hulakdanda of Bhumisthan VDC-4 in Dhading district on the Prithvi highway.

Six of the deceased have been identified, while three women and two men are yet to be identified.

According to Dhading district police office, the deceased have been identified as Rajendra Rokka of Rautahat district, the driver of the bus, conductor Kumar Rai, of Makwanpur district, Prem Kumar Mahato, of Dhanusha, Naresh Mahato, Indian national Pramod Patel of Hariyana in India and Indian national Satendra Kumar Chaudhary.

The passenger bus (Na 3 Kha 3554) heading for the capital from Birgunj skidded off the road and plunged into the Mahesh river at around 5:30 this morning.

Some of the injured are undergoing treatment at local medical, while over two dozen passengers, who have been critically injured, are undergoing treatment at Bir Hosptial in the capital.
