Today President Obama awarded the Medal of Honor to an army chaplain for his bravery in the Korean war. Although it was a posthumous award, several of the soldiers he served with and who shared a cell with him as POWs, were there at the ceremony. The medal was awarded to a nephew as his parents and his brother had all passed away. Fr. Kapaun died on May 23rd 1951, in a death cell in a Korean POW camp. When his cellmates were eventually freed they carried with them the handmade wooden cross he used to celebrate mass and lead prayer services etc. Fr. Kapaun is also a candidate for sainthood. There has been a book written about this remarkable hero, entitled: The Miracle of Father Kapaun: Priest, Soldier, and Korean War Hero by Roy Wenzl and Travis Heyin.
