France: Nicolas Sarkozy doesn't smile, one week away from the municipal elections,
The president of the french republic, Nicolas Sarkozy is very low in the opinion polls, far behind his prime minister François Fillion. He also lost the approbation of the press. Many papers make a list of all his misconducts.
"Le point", a rightwing paper, llustrates this change of mind. Its issue of the 28th of febrary 2008 is titled "L'homme cerné" = the surrounded man, and speaks of "chute" =fall, and of "spirale des couacs" = spiral of bugs. The picture speak by itself. After the triumphant images of may's victory, Nicolas Sarkozy looked tired and disillusioned.
The Ump candidates, from the Sarkozy party, don't print his name on their posters. They are afraid that the discontent of the french people against the President might lead them to loose the municipal elections. The socialist party will probably take several important cities to the right. It will be seen as a national warning sign to Nicolas Sarkozy and its unpresidential behaviour.

Hi palagret - thanks for this. Would you say there is one specific reason for Sarkozy's unpopularity or a combination of factors?

Many reasons: showing off all the time, his links with wealthy people, a tax gift to the very rich; crazy ideas like attibuting a dead jewish child to every child, an idea a day to spin people and make the event etc.
More seriously, he said he would be the president of "pouvoir d'achat", something like money value or cost of living. In fact, prices are rising. Every thing is more expensive and salaries are the same.
Sarkozy also wants to modify "la loi de séparation de l'église et de l'état" voted in 1905. This law separates church power from the state. This is the root of the Republic. The french republic is laic. No oath on the Bible, no prayer in school like in the States. Everyone can practice his religion but not mix it with politics. Sarkozy said the laic teachers could not give the children the spiritual values they need as well as priests do. It's a big insult to the atheists who don't need a god to establish moral values.
