A Free Cuba
For almost 50 years the country of Cuba has been under sanctions by the US Government. Along with the Cuban peolpe, which have been suppressed by the ruling Communist party, Fidel Castro and his followers. I'm hoping that sometime in the near future that the Embargo will End . The Cuban people deserve better. The ability to learn, To travel, to have open comuunication with the World. The opportunity see more and to hear more of what is happening around the world.
It is a shame that The United States has held a countries people accountable for the Actions of its maniacal leaders for almost 50 years ago. The time has come to recognize that the world has changed. The longer we wait, the longer the Cuban people will suffer. Poverty is just one reason to lift the US Embargo. The freedoms that are denied in Cuba are taken for granite by too many people and countries, including the US and its citizens.
The Obama administration has started the ball rolling by making it easier for Cuban Americans to travel to Cuba. I contend more can be done. Opening up Trade and Travel are just a couple of suggestions. Maybe that would at least let Fidel know that we , The US, care, and are willing to let the past go, and work toward a new relationship with Cuba. Of course it will take some effort by the Cuban govt to want to move forward too. I'm sure that will be harder than it should be, especially if Fidels brother holds onto to the same ways his brother has for decades.
Obama speaks about "Opening up the lines of Communication" with countries such as Iran, and Korea. Well those countries are still threatening to the US. Cuba is a different story. It is an Island country, only 90 miles from the US border, Who's people have been oppressed for too long. He needs to reach out to Fidel and make an offer of Faith and open dialogue. Can you Imagine the headlines "Obama to visit Cuba", the 1st sitting president to do so in Decades. If that didn't help to get the ball rolling I dont know what will. I read an article today that mentioned the Catholic church would like Obama to go further in working with Cuba to heal the wounds of the past and to look to the future. I hope he is paying attention.
I am just one person with one opinion. But I do recognize when people need help. If I can lend a little by voicing my opinion so be it.
