When I read the term “radical Muslim cleric,” one about which the world is overly familiar, it tells me several things: 1.     Muslims may be radical 2.     Muslim religious leaders may be radical 3.     Muslim clerics may be radical   So, how is the general population to know who are radical and who are not? It gets back to the question that I explored once before about how are Muslim clerics ordained? Are they self-ordained, i.e., “I studied therefore I am?”   Is there an organization, a hierarchy, as in the Catholic Church whereby leaders speak for a group? How are they policed for quality control purposes? I don’t know.
“Radical Muslim cleric arrested in Lebanon

Lebanese police officials say they have arrested a radical Muslim cleric who was sentenced in absentia last week to life in prison.

They said police arrested Omar Bakri Mohammed Sunday at his home in the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak publicly.

Lebanese officials said Bakri was among 54 people sentenced Friday as part of ongoing trials of militants who fought the Lebanese army in 2007. Bakri was convicted of membership of an armed group aiming to commit "terrorist acts" and plotting to kill Lebanese soldiers.

It was not immediately clear why authorities did not arrest Bakri earlier. He appears regularly on television and does not live in hiding.”

There's a bit on here that may answer some of that Jim, but I must say, it doesn't answer much and I'm as curious as you about this, maybe someone on here will give us some help.

When I post stories like this, I am probing for understanding.

Maybe one could interrupt "radical muslim cleric" as someone who professes anti western or anti government political views in the name of Islam and Islamic teaching.

'Ulama'; the term 'ulama' is used to describe the body of Muslim clergy who have completed several years of training and study of Islamic sciences, such as a mufti, qadi, faqih, or muhaddith. Some Muslims include under this term the village mullahs and imams, who have attained only the lowest rungs on the ladder of Islamic scholarship; other Muslims would say that clerics must meet higher standards to be considered ulama. This is why it is claimed that in Western society there are for the most of the time no ulama present, with the outcome of Muslims in the West searching for qualified knowledge from Islamic countries, to attain some accepted qualification.

Ulama learned at Islamic religious schools, Madrasahs, where they teach students about Islam and other areas of study. It is believed in Islam that a well-rounded education is something every Muslim must acquire in order to understand God’s religion in its entirety. By the end of their education, they acquire an Ijazah, an academic degree in Islamic law and jurisprudence, a practice that dates back to the first several centuries of Islam. Ulama also hold seminars where they give lectures and speeches about the area of Islam in which they specialize.

I respect the discipline is learning a religion or anything else.

It seems to me that while one may study a faith, one may misinterpret or freelance their interpretation. Going through the process of achieving religious credentials does not make every cleric infallible, does it?

Not all clerics evolve equally, IMO.

I think your first sentence gets to the heart of the truth. The USA and its Constitution tolerates religious belief but not to the extent of any one region operating as a superior force over any other. The Constitution and government trumps all religion on behalf of all free people who are allegiant to the Constituting. Such allegiance is a requirement for being a US citizen.

When you use the term, "Western or anti-government political views" I think you are specifically address the US government.

I you are against the government and our Constitution, then we are at war.

Certain places all over the world were knownly promoted for Islamic studies, like Al-Azhar university in Cairo, and The Islamic University in Mecca in Saudi Arabia. Now, each country has it's own universites and institutes which promotes certain opinions and visions that may be radical and extreme. Any one now can make fatwas and talk in religion and he hasnt joined any islamic institue before, he just read some books and articles about Islam. TV satellite channels and internet  are now a glancing opportunity for any long beard and good talker one to sell his thoughts through that might reflect a certain radical and extreme vision, and he will certainly find many people who are unfortunatly ignorant and marginalized to listen from him and believe him, and after a while his popularity increase and becomes a radical muslim cleric.
