Fresh protests in Lok Sabha over Sri Lankan issues
[ Friday, 20 February 2009, 05:43.19 AM GMT +05:30 ]
The Sri Lankan Tamil issue continued to create uproar in the Lok Sabha for the second day today with PMK, a UPA ally, demanding withdrawal of the statement of External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee on the rather delicate matter.
Raising the issue after question hour, M Ramdoss (PMK) said Mukherjee's statement contradicts the views contained in the President's address, which had spoken of the need for the Sri Lanka government to stop military operations and safeguard the interests of innocent Tamils. In that backdrop Mukherjee's statement, in which he virtually turns down demands for India's intervention to stop the military offensive in Sri Lanka, was "one-sided against the LTTE and in favour of state-sponsored terrorism," Ramdoss alleged. Dubbing Mukherjee's statement as "irresponsible", he said the Minister should have consulted partners from Tamil Nadu before making it. Making a strong plea for a ceasefire in Sri Lanka, he said "we are not supporting any group in Sri Lanka. Our only worry is about innocent Tamils. It is a question of humanity. This Gandhian land should show it has a heart".
