The ballots are being counted in Ireland for yesterday's referendum vote to change our Constitution in favour of a European one. Turnout was low, a minimum of 40% is needed to make the referendum valid, and it seems at this point that the minimum was achieved with almost 10 percentage points to spare. Early predictors were saying that a low turnout would benefit the "No" side.
Some constituencies reported that the exit polls last night were too close to call. Early indications this morning are revealing that in the rural areas of the country the "No" vote is slightly ahead in the actual count with only about 10% of the ballots counted. I will update this story throughout the day as the counting is announced.
