Meet 50 Richest People in Congress (2012 Edition)

Below you'll find the full list of the top 50 wealthiest lawmakers on Capitol Hill, as compiled by The Hill.

As you'd expect, Republicans outnumber Democrats 51-19, though #2 on the list is a Democrat. #1 on the list leads by a phenomenal amount, however.

In compiling the list, The Hill took into account disclosed assets, liabilities, and mortgages.

One point of inaccuracy: lawmakers can give an asset range rather than an exact number, and The Hill went with the low end of the range. Chances are that the real asset amount is above that minimum, right?

The Hill remarks on how many of the top 50 lost money in recent years, but it's hard to gin up much sympathy for someone who still has more money than you'll see in a lifetime. Those savings could come in handy, though, as Congress' approval rating is at 12%: matching an all-time low.

"As you'd expect, Republicans outnumber Democrats 51-19."  Actually, I didn't expect 51 out of 50 to be republicans, but then that would be just like those republicans.  Oh, and be careful not to point out that the total wealth of the 19 democrats just about matches the total wealth of the 31 republicans.

Maybe it's because the Republicans don't waste as much money as the Democrats.
