Free Lecture Series on the “Future of Transportation” Begins March 6
Steven Rees reminds readers of the transportation lecture series starting next month. Shifting Gears: Four Discussions on the Future of Transportation begins on March 6th
and admission is free, but requires reservations. The first lecture, Are Today’s Transportation Agencies Ready for Tomorrow’s Challenges, features Michael Meyer, “Director of the Georgia Transportation Institute and Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology” at SFU Harbour Centre.
Rees states in his post that “Dr. Michael Meyer has literally written the book - not to mention chaired the committees, led the departments and received the recognition - on transportation planning.” He will use his experience and knowledge “to explain the intricacies of transport policy,” and to help us “understand our current dilemmas and challenges.” Panelists include Councillor Peter Ladner, George Puil, and Stuart Ramsey.
The series is “sponsored by by the Bombardier Foundation and the Active Transport Lab at the University of British Columbia” in partnership with the Simon Fraser University City Program.
Peter Ormesher Makes Bid for Mayoral Nomination
Sean Holman reports on Public Eye Online that Businessman Peter Ormesher “has resigned from the Non-Partisan Association's board of directors to make a bid for the party's mayoral nomination.” But as is stands, the nomination won't be put to a vote. “Sam Sullivan will get the nomination if he can prove to the board he has support from the community and the association - as well as a fundraising plan.” The Vancouver Sun's Frances Bula says that councillor Peter Ladner “is opposing that so-called greenlight process, in part, because he wants Mayor Sullivan's job.” This is what prompted Ormesher to put his name forward.
“I think a two-way race could be seen as a war,” Ormesher told Pulic Eye Online. “But a three-person race is actually a race with new ideas. And it could be quite exciting for people - and beneficial for the people of Vancouver.” Ormesher is in favour of “getting some ‘new ideas and new people’ in the association.” He also says that he will wait and see if Vision Vancouver will have a race or not, but won’t rule out running if they don’t. “I do know people at Vision. And I like what they could potentially be,” says Ormesher in the post.
Wendy Van Riesen’s Dahlia Drive Mixes Art with Second Hand Clothes
From StyleFinds, Shallom reports on a recent trip to Wendy Van Riesen’s Dahlia Drive. It’s indeed an adventure, because it’s located in Deep Cove. However, Shallom called it the “highlight” of the week, as our blogger “had the pleasure of spending some time with Wendy in her beautiful home, getting an up-close-and-personal look at how she works.” Dahlia Drive's main focus is on “reworked vintage slips and mens' button down shirts.” She's been in business for two years, developing “an intricate method that involves many steps and variables, creating garments that are indeed wearable works of art.”
Shallom writes in the post that “each garment is sourced from a secondhand store or from [Van Reisen’s] large collection of vintage slips.” In addition, “respect for the environment” is a pervasive theme in her work – “reducing waste by finding ways to transform what we already have, instead of acquiring more and more.” Van Reisen is inspired by an art history course and as well as by artists like Matisse. Her future plans are to “experiment more” and to reference the “gauzy depths of nostalgia and memory.” To do this she'll use photos from her childhood and attach “the overlay under the bust of each slip to add depth and complexity to the images on each garment.”
