on a busy sunday evening.. this area is usually full of tourists... this archway was built in 1919 to commemorate the visit of King george 5th in india.. hence named as gateway of india.. indeed Mumbai (bombay) was one of the most developed and powerful city in British India, as majority of trade used to happen through mumbai.
gateway of india was built in local stone, with combination of gothic, mughal and hindu architectural styles.. gateway of india is one of the most important landmark of mumbai and is also an image of the city.
in 1947, the last british troops left india through this archway... making india a free country. Gateway has also witnessed terrorist attacks in recent years killing many innocents.. but this monument is part of life of mumbai and will never loose its spirit.
