As I went to Hokkaido, the northern Island of Japan to take part in the G8 there I never expected what would happen nor that I may witness the end of freedom of expression and maybe the end of true democracy as we knew it once from the 1950 till the 1990!
I arrived before the summit making sure I would still find a camping place and scout the surrounding area, meet some people and exchange ideas and get a sense of the mood here!
Well, all went well until about two days ago, as I wondered of to take some pictures of the lake and the Hotel as well as what ever I may find there. Before I knew it I was arrested and my camera, my lab top as well as transmitter and Video Camera where all confiscated and I was driven away in an unmarked vehicle to a Police station!
Once there I fund my self being questioned about many things, from my intention to my affiliations and connection! All in the name of security and anti terror prevention. 48 Hours later I was free to go, still had to fill out a hole pack of paper work in order to get back my Camera, Lab top and so on. My Camp side was searched as I fund out once bak there and I still have no clue what I actually may have done wrong!?
With me where some Korean Farmer belonging to an NGO as well as some Japanese Farmers that came to protest at the G8 for fair trade and to save agriculture as well as the environment. They where not to sure either what caused their arrest and ending up in Guarde aVue! Terror prevention was the official reason Given!
I could not help but point out that wile they arrested us the real terrorist if any are probably infiltrating the Police by now! Some times I should just not say any thing at all as I fund out! One thing is sure though, this G8 protester will not be allowed to express their views nor display they discontent with our great leaders looked up in a luxury Hotel over viewing the Lake Toya here!
As Mister Sarkozi said a week earlier, "Protesting and strikes do no longer matter and are irrelevant Today..." He may be right though after what I have seen here and heard I do believe that freedom of expression and Democracy it self may be coming to an end in the industrialised world!
This G8 is one of the most expensive once and probably the best protected one so far. Japan former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is the instigator of this one costing Japans tax payer 60 Billion Yen about 600 Million Dollar US. Abe is long gone since the plan started for this G8, nevertheless wile the great leaders enjoy them self with a protocol that has been long agreed on and most points already being pre arranged, this summit is merely a formality and a show that coast the People a fortune of money desperately needed in social works and environmental projects!
For ever protester and local resident I believe they must be at least one or two Police Officers here, making any once movement rather difficult at best. Controls and check point every where at train stations, bus Stations, Air ports and around Lake Toya! I have never seen as many Police Officers other than after the coup in Niger in 1982! George O. his novel 1988 has been by far excited by today, Reality seems far worth than the fiction!
Local shop owners are losing big as do all those that rely on this tourist season for seasonal employment. The bill for this G8 is in deed gigantic and will as usual be paid for by you and I not by our great leader nor our great corporations!
20,000 Police officers in Hokkaido and another 20,000 in Tokyo since Tokyo being the Capital and most protesters never made it to Hokkaido, thanks to anti terror laws and restriction put in place to make sure the great leaders of the G8 would not be disturbed! One of the officer I talked to, came all the way from Okinawa and another one from Kyoto to Guard Hokkaido's Lake Toya, that is 2000 Km away and all those nice police officers have to be lodged and feed to and most of them are not to happy to be in Hokkaido to guard the cream de la cream of Politics and Money!
I have seen Posters warning Local residence to be on alert for any thing remotely suspicious, such has visitors or activist... Activist are being treated as dangerous terrorist and very restricted in their movements, arrest are being carried out at random and at the first sign of unrest may that just be someone scratching him self can be enough of a reason to arrest him or her!
Our leaders do not seem to be able to learn any thing from previous summits where they out raged the tax paying public with their extravagances and caviar. This summit is no different the Caviar is flowing and 60 of the greatest Chefs are providing the elite with wasteful meals and entertainment that reminds one the outrageous spending of our former Monarchs that we replaced with elected leaders so this sort of abuse would stop!
Every thing is of course supposed to be ecological, at least the media displays it that way, yet it is far from that if one dares to take a closer look at it, then it reveilles to be rather the opposite.
On a brighter note yesterday as 70,000 shops and many individuals around Japan put the light out in a sign to save energy and for an eco future the G8 leaders enjoyed full comfort and champagne with Caviar and some entertainment at the tax payer expense!
Yesterday was also the 07 of July, meaning the day of Tanabata, the Star festival, the only day of the Year where a Prince on one side of the Milky way and a Princes on the Other side can cross and meet! This story did however not inspire our leaders to do the same and change our world for the better, they just fund another way to spend a lot of money and lives by looking at a possible war with Iran!
