Fourty years have passed since Muammar Gaddafi took power in Libya in a bloodless coup d'état. On September 1st 1969, Gaddafi dethrowned Kind Idris I while the king was in Greece for medical reasons. Libya was proclaimed a republic, and Muammar Gaddafi was made Colonel.
Gaddafi celebrated the 40 years with guest of honor Hugo Chavez on Tuesday, kicking off six days of festivities in the country. Military bands from 17 countries are performing during the celebration.
Muammar Gaddafi and Libya have recently received criticism for welcoming the Lockerbie bomber, Abdel Baset al-Megrahi, home as a hero. al-Megrahi is currently in hospital in Libya.
Military bands from 17 nations including France and Italy filed past and Italian acrobat jets zoomed over the Mediterranean in Gaddafi's honor, trailing smoke in the red white and green of Italy's national flag.

It is one of the most controversial and provocative leaders of North Africa, yet also one of the most ambitious and visionary once as well.
His Green Book is well worth reading. Europe has placed much hope in his ability to lead the AU into a stable and productive union.

It is hard to believe in deed that it has been 40 years already.
I grow up with his influence in a way, he came a couple of times to Niger and my
father meet with him a few times for projects that he was working on, my father hated him and yet, my uncle loved him. The people in Northern Niger respected him and I was fascinated by his Green Book after reading it as a teen. The trouble being that his book is not quiet what he ended up doing. I am still not sure about him nor can I make up my mind who he really is or weather my Father was right or my Uncle.
I do like the work his Son does and I think that he does deserve some respect for Libya is today one of better off countries.
But 40 years is a long time and maybe it would be wise to step down soon.
