Gail Schoening's Body Found in Florida Lake After 12 Years
Gail Schoening's body has finally been found at the bottom of a lake near her Florida home, twelve years after she disappeared on her way to the airport.
Gail Schoening was almost 36-years-old when she went missing in April 1997 when she was on her way to the airport to catch a flight for a job interview. Her body was still in her car. The reason she wasn't found sooner, even though police did search the bodies of water surrounding her home, was because the technology to see in poor visibility didn't exist then.
"It's hard to deal with a lake that's got a lot of silt and mud in it," Plantation police Detective Robert Rettig said Friday. "Visibility was a problem, but we eventually acquired technology that could help us deal with that."
Her case was reopened in July and now her body has been found. She apparently drove through a narrow area and then went straight in to the lake where her car flipped upside down and sunk to the bottom of the lake.
Her family is relieved that the case can be closed, even though the news is incredibly sad.
"We're happy she was found, but sad about the circumstances," Arlene Schoening, of North Brunswick, N.J., said Friday. "We'd been going through all the possibilities."
Gail Schoening had recently divorced when she went missing, and a year after she died someone called her family requesting her PIN number for her 401(K) account, but even though this was suspicious, the lead led nowhere.
Her family thought that she may have driven in to some body of water as her car was missing along with her.
A memorial service has been set for her over the Christmas period.

thanks for the outline amy, this reminds me of last night's episode of Dexter and how families may never have closure until a body is found, thankfully with today's forensics amazing information can be recovered regardless of the passage of time
