Gardena High School Shooting Described as'an Accident'
An initial report suggests that the shooting itself was an accident: a student had a gun in his backpack, and the weapon fired accidentally when the backpack was dropped. This does not readily explain how two different people were shot, however.[Update: apparently, a single shot was fired, and the bullet passed through one victim's shoulder before striking the other victim in the head]
Chatter on the police scanner suggests that the Gardena High School shooting suspect is in custody, but no official announcement has been made.
The shooting was reported at 10:30 a.m. at the campus at 1301 W. 182nd St., according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.
The condition of the victims was not immediately known. Aerial video showed that at least two people were removed from campus in ambulances.
