Gay activists attacked by orchestra in Greek National Opera
Gay rights activists protesting the censorship of the opera Rusalka by Antonín Dvořák were attacked by members of the orchestra and security staff at the Greek National Opera (Ethniki Lyriki Skini) in Athens yesterday evening.
Members of the gay and lesbian rights group OLKE were protesting the demand made by the National Opera to cut a scene from the production in which the two male characters kiss. Marion Wassermann, the French director said in an interview (click here to see video) with independent news service, TVXS.gr that although the content of the opera had been known for six weeks she was asked to make the cut only during final rehearsals.
According to Wasserman the attempt to cut the kiss came as a result of the fact that the members of the orchestra had voted to not play in the event of it being included. However the director refused to comply which led to musicians handing out leaflets last night saying that the "degenerate" scene "tainted the central hero with homosexual tendencies" and was "extreme".
Members of the Opera de Nice were booed and jeered by many members of the audience after the performance as was the director who came out on stage in attempt to justify the decision to keep the scene according to the Daily Madness blog.
Attempts by the activists to read out a statement of protest over censorship was prevented when musicians, technicians and security staff set upon members of the group and journalists present.

'Homophobia and Art in Greece'. Sounds an oxymoron in terms of classical antiquity yet is something deeply rooted in everyday modern life. Wish that the majority of Greeks (I belong to the minority ones living abroad) could finally realise that life and love are never monodimensional values.

What a pity! The birthplace of democracy getting its knickers up in a bunch all over a kiss between two men! But it's not really unusual. This country is run by the Greek Orthodox church and its homophobia permeates the culture. Recently a Bishop Seraphim launched a one million euro lawsuit against gay AIDS activist Leo Kalovyrnas, when he reacted rudely to the Bishop's statement calling gay men "morally corrupt, obsessed with satisfying their psychopathological deviation..." The same Bishop said that a popular Greek actor who was murdered in a hate crime brought it on himself because the actor forced him to have sex with him, and him not being 'that way' justifiably got upset and stabbed the actor 21 times to defend himself!

Ummmmm.....where is there a gay kiss in the synopsis of Rusalka. I know the opera; I've seen the opera; and I've just read the plot again and there is no gay kiss. If there was and it was deleted I'd be upset. However, it sounds to me like it is a director's idea and has nothing to do with what the composer or librettist wrote.
