Ian Hunter, an ALP member of parliament in South Australia who has been openly gay since his beginnings in politics, has urged the Prime Minster, Kevin Rudd, to allow same-sex marriage.

Hunter believes that the PM has been imposing his personal beliefs on the rest of the country in his disallowing of gay matrimony.

"I want to get married...Next year will be the twentieth anniversary of my not being married to my partner Leith," he told parliament today according to AdelaideNow. "Yes, I could travel to Massachusetts or South Africa and get married. But I want to share my marriage with my family and my friends - like we all do".

Rudd has previously stated that the government will investigate into partnership registration, but Mr. Hunter countered this by stating he would not be satisfied with "the crumbs from the table".

"I want to get married - and you, Mr. Rudd, are stopping me".

AdelaideNow is running a poll on whether marriage should be allowed to heterosexual couples. At the time of writing, it was 50% who believed yes, 47% who disagreed and a 2% margin of people who were unsure.
