Obama's broken promise has Gay Democratic donors boycotting a Democratic National Committee fundraiser to be held next Thursday, June 25th, because they are outraged by President Obama's legal brief filed last week against same-sex marriage.

The timing of the brief, which the president of the leading gay and lesbian rights organization said caused his community “pain,” is awkward, given that next Thursday, June 25, the Democratic National Committee is hitting up the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community for cash in a fundraiser featuring Vice President Biden.

As John Aravosis at AmericaBlog reports, gay donors, outraged at the legal brief, are withdrawing their support from the event.

The treasurer of the DNC, Andrew Tobias, finds himself distancing himself from the brief, as Ben Smith of Politico reports.

"If this debacle of a brief represented the president's views, I'd boycott too," Tobias said in an e-mail. But Tobias insisted that he “personally totally believe(s) in the president.”

David Mixner, a former adviser to President Clinton, is not so sold, writing that the brief is a “sickening document” that “could have been written  by the Rev. Pat Robertson. Using the worst of stereotypes, it intimates that we don't have constitutional guarantees, invokes scenarios of incest, of children and advocates that we don't have the same rights as others who have struggled for civil rights.”

Mixner says many scholars don’t think the Obama administration needed to defend the Defense of Marriage Act, which states that states don’t have to accept same sex marriages from other states.  Some disagree. But “to a person, they say that the response is way out of line, totally unnecessary and goes far beyond anything required. They all agree that if the Department of Justice felt they had to respond, a simple, few-paged brief on the very limited issue before the Federal Court would have been all that was necessary.”

The brief, Mixner argues, “undercuts every conceivable argument that the LGBT community would use to fight for the repeal of DOMA. Right-wing nut cases can now just simply quote horrible stuff from this hateful brief and proclaim loudly it was filed by the Obama Justice Department.”

Aravosis is mad, criticizing "this rather ill-timed and inappropriate Democratic effort to milk money from our community at the same time Democrats are equating us with incest and not lifting a finger on any of our legislation priorities in Congress or the White House. It's not awfully clear why any gay person would give a Democrat a dime ever again.”

Maybe Obama realizes that this is NOT something that people are born with, it's a lifestyle choice. We are mammals, high thinking, but mammals. In some cases, us high thinking mammals make the conscious decision to be gay. It's not something that needs to be legislated, it's bad behavior. What bad behavior will we, as the MAJORITY of Americans be asked to identify as okay? Will it be prostitution, incest, rape, or some other behavior that MOST of the world considers reprehensible. It's not about religion either. As far as I'm concerned, religion is just another cult, much like the Democratic and Republican parties are just a way to corral people of similar mindsets into a group for the betterment of certain individuals. NATURE tells us that homosexual behavior is not normal, MOST high thinking mammals KNOW it's wrong. Like the murderer who thinks that what he does is a service to some segment of society because he kills bad people, this behavior is no more acceptable to the general public. THAT'S why it keeps being struck down by voters.

JDPig, thank you for reading and commenting. "Maybe Obama realizes that this is NOT something that people are born with, it's a lifestyle choice."

If this is true then President Obama has realized wrong, along with the perceived "MAJORITY".

Furthermore, NATURE does in fact tell us that homosexuality exists in the Kingdom of Animals, and is, in fact, quite natural.

Rhonda... Please give me examples of where in nature tells us that homosexuality is natural. A-sexuality is natural in some parts of nature, but not homosexuality. In NATURE, sex is engaged in for the sole purpose of pro-creation for the survival of the species. Homosexuality in nature would eliminate a species. The behavior is NOT natural and is indeed a lifestyle choice, just like preferring blondes, or rich businessmen is a lifestyle choice. I have nothing against homosexuality as a lifestyle choice, but that does not give homosexuals a right to press their beliefs on the majority, just like religions have no right, in the constitution, to be recognized by the general public as some kind of law. Religions, political parties, groups committed to pursuing certain rights based on bad behavior, all cultist organizations that prey on the herd mentality. If you didn't have the sheep, your cause would have no voice.

Logic Vs. You

St. Thomas Aquinas used a similar argument to yours and it also really fails to hold up given that almost all species of mammals have instances of homosexual behavior, including many apes that are almost the same (genetically) as us.  Please, stop trying to cloak bigotry in a "nature" argument, almost all high thinking mammals across all geographic regions have instances of homosexual behavior.  In case you are still missing the point: your argument is weak, please reconsider.

WOW! And overtly leftists view of the issue... who would have thunk it! There's no bias there is there? Look, as one poster on your link pointed out.. some of these same animals have sex with their own family members, SOME even eat their young. Should we allow that as well. How about sex with children? Isn't it natural if it's a brain condition that makes someone want to have sex with children? So let 'em have at it, right? Whatever the argument, it's WRONG! This is a lifestyle choice. How do you explain bi-sexuals who hop from bed to bed having sex with whoever they find attractive? Should we allow them to marry a man and a woman at the same time? Might as well bring back polygamy as well. According to the beliefs of SOME, it's the natural order of things for a man to have multiple wives.

JDPig, I am not here to convince you, only to put the information before you so you can think intelligently on the matter.

I do find it interesting (among other matters) however that your comment, in its entirety, seems to ignore the question: How do you explain heterosexuals who hop from bed to bed having sex with whoever they find attractive?

As a Black gay Democrat and Obama supporter,  I'm really disappointed in the administration's defense of DOMA. I'm not even going to get into to the homosexuality is not natural garbage from JDpig-head. Homosexuality is not an abomination, it is a variation of human sexuality...and yes it occurs in nature. There are countless studies of it in the animal kingdom although I don't think I need to justify my orientation on animal behavior.

I support this DNC event being protested. I will not donate to the Democrats until they stop taking the gay community for granted. The thing the President is signing tonight that gives very limitied benefits to federal gay employees does not go far enough and is just a crumb to keep us quiet. It's not going to work.
