Gays treated horribly in Russia, what you can do about it to stop
Gays are treated horribly in Russia. Maybe not as bad as in Sub-Saharan African nations such as Uganda, where there are bills to give them the death penalty. But pretty bad. It is illegal to protest or write for gay rights. It is illegal to "advocate" for homosexuality, whatever that means exactly.
Gays who do protest are beaten up by security forces or thugs who police do not arrest. Part of this is the dominance of the Russian Orthodox Church in Russian politics and how this church supports the quasi-dictator, President V. Putin.
The fact is, Christianity in its' purest form is not supportive of gay rights and yes, the bible calls for the death penalty for male homosexuality. It also calls for the death penalty for eating of shellfish, by the way. Christianity, in its' most fundamentalist form, is very much anti-gay.
Well, President Obama stated that he hopes gay American athletes win gold medals in the Winter Olympics in Russia next year. I agree, just as I would have agreed with FDR saying the same thing in 1936 about African-American and Jewish athletes winning gold medals in Berlin, Germany.
Well, a far right-wing talk show host (whose name I won't use to give him free publicity) with a history of anti-gay statements, disagreed with President Obama on this issue. In fact, when I made that previous analogy dealing with Nazi Germany, he asked me was it O.K. for governments to run their nations free of foreign interference.
The implication being that we in the U.S. shouldn't dissent if a nation wants to persecute gays in Russia, or I guess, Jews in Nazi Germany. He didn't say the last part, but if he is true to these principles, he must.
By the way, this host, is the same man who opposed ending the witch-hunts against gays in the military, under Don't Ask, Don't Tell. He stated that gays who don't reveal their homosexuality (though they weren't even asked those questions under DADT) are liars who don't deserve to serve.
Would he have been as disdainful of lite skinned African Americans who joined a segregated U.S military as white 70 years ago? Calling them liars who didn't deserve to be in it? Again, I wonder.
So, please sign the petition at the pro-gay rights website All Out, that calls on the International Olympic Committee to state to Russia to end its' persecution of gays and lesbians in that nation.
Also, please sign the petition to oppose the proposed anti-gay bill in Nigeria that would have the effect of:
10 years in prison for living with someone of the same sex
10 years in prison for supporting the idea of a pride march
14 years in prison for trying to have a wedding
Fighting for civil rights, here in the U.S. and throughout the world, requires bold action. As a quote attributed to the anthropologist Margaret Mead states, "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."
